CUT OFF IN THE PRIME OF LIFE RECENT HEROIC ACT AT ISIPINGO Eric Hardy Nicholson, sugar chemist, of Emoyeni, Zululand, and Isipingo Beach, died from enteric fever at Addington Hospital on Monday afternoon, Jan. 18. Eric, one of the best, athletic and of a fine personality, was born in Hannan, Scotland, 23 years ago, and Natal claimed him as one of her most promising sons. A few weeks ago in manly vigour, he bore a major part in rescuing from the sea, at Tiger Rocks, Isipingo Beach, a party of four, and bringing them back from the portal of death. Seeking no fame, he allowed the credit to go to others. That was Eric's idea of taking a holiday—helping others. Truly, and in all reverence, it might be said of him, "He saved others, himself he could not save." He rests in the quiet cemetery at Isipingo, with a company, who, each in his turn, like Eric Nicholson, quitted themselves like men. Many hearts go out in sympathy to those who mourn their loss. Yet consolation might come in remembering "That to live in the hearts of those we leave behind is not to die."—(Contributed.) |
