L38. ELIZABETH GRAINGER born COATES

Elizabeth Coates was born on the 13th November 1719, at Lynesack, Durham.1

She married [L27] Joseph Grainger after the 3rd April 1744. Their children were: Caleb (1746–1748) and [L26] Rachel (1748/9–1826); in 1748/9 she was of Raby.2

She died on the 13th February 1758, at Raby.3

Elizabeth Coates was the daughter of [L39] Henry and [L40] Rachel Coates.4

L39. HENRY COATES

Henry Coates was born on the 28th November 1679 at Woodland, Durham.1

He married [L40] Rachel Kay on the 7th November 1717, at the Friends' meeting house in Lartington, Durham. Their children were: [L38] Elizabeth (1719–1758), Kay (1720/1 – after 1798), Joseph (1722–1791), Ebenezer (1724–1735), Sarah (1726–1796), Daniel (1729–1791), and Rachel (1731/2 – after 1764); all were born at Lynesack, Durham.2

In December 1726 "Mr. Henry Coats near West-Pitts" was one of two men acting in the sale of land and buildings in Woodland, Cockfield.3

In 1756 he had a copyhold estate within the township of Lynsack and Softley, valued at £60.9.11½ p.a.4

On the 2nd May 1757 "the House wherein Henry Coats now dwells" was the rendezvous for the agents and tenants of the Bishop of Durham, Lord of the Manor of Wolsingham, Durham, "to ride and perambulate the Bounds of the Moors, Wates, and Commons, belonging to Lynesack and softley, (being part of his Lordship's said Manor)". He was a yeoman, of West Pits, Lynesack.5

Of Linsack, near Raby, he died before 31 July 1773.5

Henry Coates was the second child and second son of [L14] George and [L21] Elizabeth Coates.6

L40. RACHEL COATES born KAY

Rachel Kay was born at Raby, Durham on 4 July 1693.1

Rachel Kay married [L39] Henry Coates on the 7th November 1717, at the Friends' meeting house in Lartington, Durham. Their children were: [L38] Elizabeth (1719–1758), Kay (1720/1 – after 1798), Joseph (1722–1791), Ebenezer (1724–1735), Sarah (1726–1796), Daniel (1729–1791), and Rachel (1731/2 – after 1764); all were born at Lynesack.2

She died on 31 July 1773, and was buried on 1 August at Darlington, Durham.3

Rachel Kay was the daughter of [L41] Daniel and [L43] Elizabeth Kay.4

L41. DANIEL KAY or KEY

Daniel Key was baptised at Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, on 12 April 1654.1

Daniel Kay married [L43] Elizabeth ____. Their children were: Katherine (1688–1730), Jane (1690–1731), [L40] Rachel (1693–1773), and Elizabeth (1695 – ?). He was of Hegholm, Lartington, Durham, during this period. He lived in Hegholm, Lartington, from at least 1688 until his death, which took place on 21 July 1719, the event being recorded by Darlington Monthly Meeting.2

Daniel Key was the son of [L42] Christopher Kay.

Christopher Key was presumably of Romaldkirk, Yorkshire, in 1654.1

L43. ELIZABETH KAY born ____

Elizabeth ____ was born in about 1653.1

She married [L41] Daniel Kay. Their children were: Katherine (1688–1730), Jane (1690–1731), [L40] Rachel (1693–1773), and Elizabeth (1695 – ?). She was of Hegholm, Lartington, Durham, during this period.2

She died at Raby, Durham on 30 November 1698.3

Suggestions for further research

Birth/baptism and parentage details for [L42] Christopher Key, and marriage details for [L41] Daniel Kay would seem to be the essential next steps. FamilySearch has two possible baptisms for Christopher, 1611 in Romaldskirk and 1615 in Barnard Castle, to Willm and John respectively.
