RACHEL WATSON 15 4 7mo 1833. Daughter of the late Joseph Watson, jun., Allendale, Northumberland, of whom some account was given in No. 11; and of Mary Watson, whose decease is noticed in No. 17, of the Annual Monitor. She was educated at Wigton School, which she left in the 10th month, 1832, and went to reside with her grandfather at Allendale; being then in a delicate state of health, which continued gradually to decline. She was of an amiable disposition, and bore a protracted illness with patience and resignation. When she found her recovery was doubtful, she did not murmur, but calmly submitted to the will of the Almighty; although she seemed much affected with the thoughts of leaving her sister, and other near connexions, to whom she was much attached. She did not say much respecting her prospects of a future state, but her countenance and deportment expressed so much peace, that it was often remarked by those who visited her, as being comfortable to behold. The night previous to her dissolution, she was much distressed by difficulty of breathing, and on being asked by one of her friends, if there was any thing they could do for her, she said: "No, you have done all you can---you have done your duty: let us trust in the Lord: He will support both you and me: the conflict will soon be over; then I trust all will be well. I have no desire to live in this world for any thing, but that I might be a comfort to you; but seeing it is the Lord's Will to take me away, I hope I can now give you up; and do not fret for me, but rejoice and pray for me, that my patience may hold out to the end." Near the final close, she was concerned to supplicate the Lord, to take her to Himself, in his own time, saying: "Not my will, but Thine be done." The last words that could be understood were: "Lord Jesus! receive my spirit." When we behold with what confidence, in the dying hour, both the young and the experienced Christian, can commit their souls into the hands of our ever adorable Redeemer; is there not abundant cause to lament over those, who can deny the LORD that bought them; or who can count the blood of his covenant as an unhallowed or unholy thing! |
