EXTRAORDINARY CASE AT BEDFORD. Two months ago the Governors of the Bedford Harpur Trust confirmed the action of Mr. A.C. Powell, headmaster of Bedford Modern School, in dismissing Dr. Tisbrocke, the German master, and of German origin. An extraordinary sequel was heard at the Bedford police-court to-day, when Denis John Richardson was summoned under the National Registration Act for changing his residence from Letchworth to Bedford, and not within twenty-eight days sending the local registration authority his certificate of registration. The defendant pleaded guilty, and Mr. Stimson, Town Clerk, who prosecuted, said the defendant was the new German master at the Bedford Modern School. He was a German, but was naturalised. It was known that there were large numbers of Belgians at Letchworth, and they also knew there were German spies about. He asked the Bench to impose a severe penalty. The Chief Constable said the defendant went to him, and the witness advised him what to do. He was a German subject, and for all he knew his father will still in Germany. The defendant also told him he had changed his name from Kuhlmann to Richardson. Addressing the Bench, the defendant said it was not true that he was a German subject. He was an Italian subject. His father was an Austrian and his mother was English. The latter was still living at Letchworth. The Bench ordered the defendant to pay £9. |
