1873-01-04 Southampton Police Court:

DRUNK AND DISORDERLY.—Charles Clark Pollard and James Henry Thompson, the latter of Weymouth, a Hartley student, were charged with being drunk and disorderly in Above Bar-street on Friday evening.—Police-constable Groves stated that he was called to the Royal York Hotel by Mr. Wm. Hyles, who complained that the two prisoners were very drunk and wanted to fight. He requested them to leave and witness was obliged to put them out. Thompson on getting into the street again wanted to fight, but they were put into a cab by a friend and went away. They came back again about 11 o'clock, renewed the disturbance, and were locked up. Police-sergeant Attrill said the prisoners had been turned out of the Rainbow for being disorderly, and Pollard's abuse was very bad.—Inspector Harris stated that Pollard had been a great trouble and nuisance about the streets for the past 12 months, and had been before the magistrates twice before.—The magistrates said they should treat Pollard as any ordinary man, and would send him to gaol for seven days with hard labour. Thompson was fined 10s and costs, or seven days' imprisonment with hard labour.—If they were brought there again they would have a more severe sentence.—Prisoners appeared to be much astounded at the sentence.
