Air raid victim's gift to Trust An air raid victim's legacy to the National Trust has given the public a 215-acre sheep farm known as Taw House, at the head of Eskdale, in Cumberland. The bequest is that of Mr. Robert De Satur Merz, 24-years-old son of the late Mr. Charles H. Merz, the well-known electrical engineer, senior partner of the firm of Merz and McLellan, consulting engineers, and a native of Gateshead. Both were killed in the raid, together with Mr. Charles Merz's daughter, Miss Pauline Barbara Merz. Taw House adjoins Wha House, a recent acquisition of the Trust. Both are mentioned in the Eskdale XXIV. Book of 1587, where they are named "Teathes" and "Whaes." They are in the foreground of grand scenery. Mr. Robert Merz's will was proved at £28,000 gross. He left the residue of his estate to London charities and the National Trust. Moorland at Grasmere extending to nearly 70 acres, with Allcock Tarn, formed part of the residual estate. The National Trust is purchasing this land. |
