ROBBERY FROM THE PERSON AT THE TEMPERANCE BAZAAR.At the Borough Court [in Bradford], yesterday, a robbery of this description was inquired into. The woman charged was Sarah Brownif that was her real name, and who described herself as a dressmaker, dressed in a fashionable style with bonnet and feather, striped woollen cloak, and brown or claret stuff dress. On Thursday afternoon she entered the bazaar, and Mrs. W.S. Nichols, who, with Miss Binns and others, attended N.3 Stall, found herself rather rudely jostled, and on turning round saw no crowd near, but only the prisoner, but she suspected nothing wrong, and it was some time before she missed her purse, which contained two £5 Bank of England notes, quite new, a third note of the same value which had been cut and joined again, and she could not swear positively whether there was a fourth note or not, but there was in her purse altogether about £30 and memorandums, &c. Miss Mary Emma Binns, who attended the same stall with Mrs. Nichols, said she suspected who was the thief as soon as she heard of the robbery. To Mr. Hutchinson, jun., who appeared for the prisoner, Miss Binns replied that she thought when serving the prisoner at the stall that she was anything but respectable, as she always, when addressing her, used the words "my dear," in a peculiar way, and though it was a temperance bazaar, smelled strongly of gin. [ . . . ] [prisoner remanded] |

Mary Emma Binns: (scholar 18491851), was the eldest daughter of George Binns, of Bradford. In the earlier years of her life she gave much time to the work of the Friends' Sunday School at Bradford, and to the social and other activities there, including the Temperance work. At her home she, along with her sisters, always had a ready welcome for the numerous visitors, both when residing at Bradford, and later at Harrogate. She made many friends, who greatly enjoyed her conversational powers. She died on January 11, 1925, aged 87. |

Rachael Binns: (scholar 18571859), was the second daughter of George Binns, of Bradford. As her health was never robust, she spent but a short time at Ackworth, and this same delicate health prevented her later from taking up any active pursuits in life; but in the retirement of her home, her literary and artistic temperament found many modes of expression. Her love and cultivation of flowers was a great delight to her. She spent all her long life in close and sympathetic companionship with her sister Mary Emma, the last years being spent at Cloughton, near Scarborough. Here she died, a fortnight before her sister, on December 26, 1924, aged 80 years. |
