1891-04-11 | at Petty Sessions: Not Travellers. Alexander O'Grady, seventy-nine, of Oatland Rise, Higham Hill, Walthamstow, and Thomas Yeoman, of 32, Ickworth Park-road, Walthamstow, were summoned for being on licensed premises during prohibited hours. Police Inspector Harry Diddams saw Yeoman and O'Grady come from the Higham Hill Tavern at 11.20 a.m. on Sunday, 29th ult. He took the men back into the house. There was no one at the door, which was partly open. About thirty persons were in the house, and a little girl about thirteen years of age, the daughter of the landlord, was behind the bar serving. Yeoman said he was a farrier, carrying on business near Hoe-street Bridge, and he went to the Higham Hill Tavern on business. The landlord had a horse which suffered with a bad foot, and he called to see it. Yeoman was fined 20s. and the costs; O'Grady, who pleaded guilty, was fined 10s. and the costs.Arthur Pollard, the landlord, was next summoned for unlawfully keeping his premises open. Alexander O'Grady said that when he entered defendant's house a man did ask him where he came from, and he said Hackney. Mr. Spicer said there was a doubt in this case, and the Bench should give the defendant the benefit of it, and dismiss the summons. They thought that, considering it was a house much frequented by visitors on Sundays, defendant should not have had only a girl of about thirteen years of age in the bar, and they did not think the man was altogether a trustworthy man to hold the position of door-keeper. Defendant: I discharged him last week. |
