1902-11-26 | at Gloucester County Court, special sitting to
hear a case against the Great Western Railway Company, under the
Workmen's Compensation Act: Henry Frank Ferry, who saw Palmer on the day of the accident about 10.30, just after he was relieved, said he lived about five minutes' walk from deceased, and saw the deceased nearly every day. Deceased told him he fell from the engine, turned a somersault, and thought he struck his face in falling. His wife and brother were present. On the day before he died he complained of the same thing. He complained of his mouth also. Cross-examined, witness said he saw the deceased continually, but he never said anything about falling off the engine until two days before his death. After his first stay at home he insisted on returning to work, as he thought the Company would think he was imposing upon them if he didn't start work, as he had been receiving compensation. He had often heard Palmer complaining of neuralgia and of his teeth. |
Gloucester Citizen, 1902-11-26 |
Henry Frank Ferry, an engine driver, saw deceased at Gloucester on the day of the accident, and almost daily afterwards. He appeared to be in a bad state, and witness tried to persuade him not to return to his work. After he ceased work the second time witness visited him, and remembered that about two days before his death, deceased, speaking of the accident, said he had fallen on his face and turned a somersault.By Mr. Goff: Deceased never said anything about falling off his engine and turning a somersault until a day before his death. Deceased had always suffered from neuralgia. Mr. Fox saw witness, and he gave him a statement; he could not understand why he had omitted to say anything about what deceased had said just before his death. |

1910-05-19 | in court at Godalming: ALLEGED BIGAMY. Edward Peto, a butler of Hindhead-road, Godalming, is alleged to have married Lucy Ann Alden, on October 11 last, his lawful wife, Bessie Kate Ferry, hom he married on February 10, 1908, being still alive. Both the women were in Court at Godalming on Thursday, when the case was gone into, after which Peto was committed to take his trial at the next Surrey Assizes. Prisoner did not deny the charge, and the story told was that the first marriage took place at the Guildford Registry Office. As to the second marriage, Miss Alden stated that she had known prisoner 2½ years, and was engaged to him for three months before the ceremony, which took place at St. Andrew's Church, Earlsfield. Since the marriage they had lived at Hindhead-road, Godalming. Prisoner was charged, but made no reply, and called his wife to give evidence. Mrs. Peto said she and her husband had never actually lived together; prisoner had treated her as his wife, but had not provided a home with him for herself and their baby. He kept her sufficiently supplied with money until last October, since when he had not sent enough. Prisoner was then committed for trial. |
