SUICIDAL, OR SELF-BAPTISM?About three o'clock on Sunday afternoon a woman named Ferry, of Trinity-place, Chapelry, Weymouth, made an attempt, which can hardly be called suicidal, though it may cost her her life from shock and cold. Taking a child with her on the way, she went up beyond the railway station, and walked in that very pleasant field of Mr. George Gill's, which adjoins the Backwater, just on the edge of Radipole parish. Arriving near the old limekiln, she deliberately walked into the water, but appears to have found it too unpleasant, for then she lustily cried out. Mr. Langdon, a foreman porter of the railway, was taking a walk with his wife, and heard the cries, and, his attention being drawn to Backwater, he saw the woman's head, went to the place, and found her emerging from the water. Langdon assisted her up, and went to Sergeant Wills for assistance; but when the Sergeant went back with him, they found the woman had returned to the foreshore, where she was kneeling, and apparently praying. The sergeant then took charge of her, and she was conveyed across the field to the Spa House, being in a numbed state, apparently from having been so long in the water. A crowd naturally gathered as she was being conveyed across the field, and among the people was her brother, who recognised her. At the house restoratives and rubbing brought her round, and, a trap being sent for, she was removed to Weymouth, and put under the care of Dr. Nathan. Miss Fanny Ferry, who walked into the Backwater at Radipole on Sunday afternoon, seems never to have fully recovered from the shock. She died at 20 minutes to five on Tuesday morning. Information was conveyed to the Coroner, and Mr. Symonds came down and enquired into the case, the result being that he did not consider an inquest necessary. The case could not be considered one of attempted suicide, as Miss Ferry did not even wet her hair. She is said to have been a deeply religious and most industrious and steady person, and probably her health had been affected by too close attention to indoor work, and lack of diversion and outdoor exercise. To relieve her ill-health she had had recourse to some quack medicine, it is said, which was unsuited to her case, and this, with the want of exercise, probably somewhat affected her mind. Her age was 35. |

WEYMOUTH SAD DEATH OF A YOUNG WOMAN.On Sunday a young woman named Fanny Ferry, who lives with her father at Trinity-place, Chapelhay, left home about half-past eleven in the morning, saying she was going to meet her sister who is in service at Greenhill. Instead, however, of going there she seems to have wandered about and did not return home to dinner, but nothing transpired to call attention to her until about half-past three in the afternoon, when, as the foreman porter and his wife were going across the fields to Radipole, they heard a woman scream, and on looking in the direction whence the sounds proceeded saw a woman in the Backwater. At this time the tide was very low, and she was 30 or 40 yards from the shore, and coming back to the beach. The poor creature was, of course, very muddy and wet, and on gaining the beach was in a very exhausted condition, in fact quite helpless. She has been very low spirited for some time, fearing she would die of consumption, but there is no ground for supposing she attempted to commit suicide; in fact, everything tends the other way. The water where she was seen coming from was exceedingly shallow, so that no person could be drowned without lying flat, and this the young woman had not done, as her head was not all wet. She never rallied from the effects of her immersion, and died on Tuesday morning, but it was not considered necessary to hold an inquest. |
