1899-07-15 | at Basingstoke town bench: ALLEGED CRUELTY TO A HORSE. Charles Brooker was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a horse by tying a rope round its jaw and leaving it so throughout a whole night. It appeared that the animal belonged to Mr. Stratford, butcher, and had been turned out on to the common. On Sunday, the 16th inst., Mr. Stratford's man had been unable to catch the animal, and had left it; subsequently defendant succeeded in getting hold of the halter, which it had on and a rope which depended from it, and on which the animal kept stepping, causing run round. No witness could be found to prove that defendant fixed the rope on the animal's jaw. It subsequently got away from defendant, and next morning was found with its jaw tied with the rope, and with its tongue swollen from being so all night, and evidently in much pain. The trustees of the common prosecuted in this case as a warning to the lads who have been giving much trouble by interfering with the animals on the common. The Bench did not see their way to convict, and the case was dismissed. |
