£60 WAS STILL OUTSTANDING MR; Papworth, of Papworth transport "St. Anne's," Guildford Road, Ash, was ordered at Aldershot County Court on Tuesday to pay £60 with costs to a haulage contractor who worked for him during Army demolition in Aldershot, and who sued him for under-payment The contractor was Mr James Arthur Walters, 17 Moor Lane, Staines. Mr. Walters was employed by Mr. Papworth to transport hardcore and concrete from a site at North Camp to other sites in Fleet, Crookham, and Cove. Mr. A. M. Wallace for Walters said there was an oral arrangement between them, but during this period Mr Walters undertook work for a third man, Mr. Pickford, through Mr. Papworth, who agreed to pay for him and collect later. Mr. Walters said he received £1,062 from Mr. Papworth, but the latter later ended the agreement with Mr. Pickford and told him (Walters) to deal with Pickford direct. What payment he received from Mr. Pickford, said Mr. Walters, had nothing to do with Papworth, and at the end of the deal Mr. Papworth still owed him £60. Mr. Papworth claimed that the £60 was settled by Mr. Brian Pickford and Mr. Pickford, of The Street, Tongham, confirmed this, but Judge C. H. Duveen, Q.C., said he accepted Mr. Walters' story and he had made out his case. |
