JAS. RAMMAGE was indicted for stealing from the yard of the White Hart inn, in English Street, on the 29th ult., one stirk's skin of the value of 10s.—the property of Mr. Elihu Sutton, of Scotby.

The skin had been bought by Mr. Sutton of a person in Carlisle market about twelve o'clock on the 29th ult., and was taken up by him to the White Hart inn, where he quarters, and laid down in the yard beside a quantity of other skins. Hen then went in to get dinner, and on his return found the skin had been taken away. Upon this inquiry was made, and the skin was found at the tan yard of Mr. Lamb, whose apprentice, it was proved in the course of the evidence, had bought it of the prisoner for two shillings.

The above statements were fully borne out by the evidence adduced, and the prisoner was sentenced to be imprisoned in the house of correction for three months, and during the last fortnight of the time to undergo solitary confinement.

COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE.—A public meeting was held at Scotby, in the News and Reading Room, on Monday night, for the purpose of considering the proposal of the Government to organize the militia, and to petition against the measure. Great interest was manifested, and the room was soon filled, chiefly by those who would be liable to serve if balloted. Mr. Elihu Sutton was called to the chair, and opened the meeting by expressing his disapprobation of the intended enrolment, and the injury society at large would sustain if carried out. [ . . . ] This was the largest public meeting ever held in Scotby, about one hundred adults being present: several from the neighbouring villages were there; and the united and unanimous manner in which all the resolutions were carried evinced most strongly the determination of the people in this district to oppose the ballot, as an infringement of their civil liberty.
