Robert Thomas Hayllar: (scholar 1841–5), son of Robert and Mary Ann Hayllar, was born at Newport Pagnell, Bucks., in 1832. One of his brothers, Benjamin Hayllar, of Philadelphia, who was also an Ackworth scholar, still survives him. R.T.H. always had a kindly recollection of the time spent at Ackworth—four and a half years without a break—in the old pre-vacation, stage-coach days. In 1857, he married Eliza Buffery, of Warwick, and as she was not a member, he left the Society of Friends on his marriage. For many years he carried on business in Southampton Row, London. He died at Herne Hill, S.E., August 24th, 1914, aged 82 years. |

A QUAKER'S MARRIAGE.—On Wednesday last, the nuptials of Mr. George Follows and Miss Lucy Ann Hayllar, at the Friends' Meeting House in this town, attracted a numerous assemblage. The ceremony is simple and characteristic of the Friends. After the meeting had sat in silence for nearly three quarters of an hour, the betrothed rose from their seats. Mr Follows took the hand of the bride, and in slow and audible words said—"I take this my friend, Lucy Ann Hayllar, to be my wife, promising, through Divine assistance, to be unto her a loving and faithful husband, until it shall please the Lord by death us to separate." She on her part made a similar declaration. Another lengthened pause followed, when Mr. George Sutterthwaite, of Ackworth, delivered an appropriate address. At the conclusion Mr. Thomas Harrisson read the certificate:—"George Follows, of Kennington Lane, London, son of — Follows, of Bangor, Carnarvonshire, and his wife, the former deceased, and Lucy Ann Hayllar, of Sheffield, having duly made known their intention of taking each other in marriage to the Balby monthly meeting of Friends, commonly called Quakers, in the county of York, the proceedings of the said George Follows and Lucy Ann Hayllar, after due inquiry, were allowed by the said meeting, they appearing clear of all other, and having consent of their parents. Now these are to certify that for the accomplishing of their said marriage this third day of April, 1867, they, the said George Follows and Lucy Ann Hayllar, appeared before a company of the aforesaid people in their meeting house, and the said George Follows and Lucy Ann Hayllar did then and there set their hands to these presents." This declaration was signed by about twenty persons. The bridal party, accompanied by their friends, proceeded at the Royal Hotel to luncheon.—Doncaster Gazette. |
