FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE DOCKS.—A sad accident occurred at the South Dock, Sunderland, on Monday morning, about eight o'clock, by which a man named George Spooner, sailor on board the steamer Southwick, met with an untimely end. It appears that the mate of the Southwick had gone on shore along with Spooner for breakfast, and when nearing the crossing at the Moor Arch an engine was approaching from the south. The mate turned off in order to get behind the engine, but Spooner appears to have endeavoured to get in front, and, failing in the attempt, the engine had caught him on the head, and knocking him down, passed over him, almost cutting off his head. The body was at once conveyed to the Waterman's Cabin. A medical gentleman was called in, but he immediately pronounced him dead.—At the inquest, Robert Cooper, Thomas Ferry, driver of the engine, A. Creelman, and P.C. Hunter gave evidence as to how the accident occurred, after which the Coroner said it appeared that Spooner hurrying to his breakfast had as much to do with the accident as anything, and he did not think any one was to blame. A verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.

INTERMENT OF MRS MCCULLOUGH AT ST. MARY'S, RAINTON.—The remains of Mrs McCullough, wife of Mr Malcolm McCullough, schoolmaster, Leamside, were interred at St. Mary's, Rainton, on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased had been in failing health for a long time, and had been in great suffering, which she bore with exemplary fortitude. She was the daughter of Mr. Robert Ferry, of Seaham Harbour, and after serving an apprenticeship as pupil teacher proceeded to St. Hild's Training College for Schoolmistresses. At the end of two years' successful training she was appointed head mistress of the New Herrington Schools, and was a member of St. Hild's Association. The funeral was choral, and the beautiful burial service was impressively read by the rector, the Rev. R.B. Thompson, assisted by the curate, the Rev. A.D. Dixey. Mr W.F. Gilliland, organist of St. Oswald's, Durham, presided at the organ, and played the "Dead March" in Saul whilst the cortege was leaving the church. The Burial Psalm 39 was chanted, and "On the Resurrection morning" was sung in church, and "Fight the good fight" at the graveside. The following sent wreaths:—Mr McCullough (husband), Miss McCullough (daughter), Mr and Mrs Howe, Mr and Mrs Minnis, Mr and Mrs Hope, teachers of Leamside Schools (Miss A.M. Blacket, Miss Emily Burrow, and Miss M. Howcroft), scholars of Leamside Schools, teachers of New Herrington Schools, the Misses Draper (Linden House), Mr T.N. Hewitt, Mr and Mrs Scorer and family, the Misses Welsh (Broom House, Leamside), Mr Gilliland and family, Mr and Mrs Nelson and family, Mrs Curtis (Fence Houses), Mrs J. Ferry (Seaham Harbour), and others. Mr W. Draper, of Draper Brothers, was the undertaker.
