He served in France till October, 1916, when owing to Exposure and other hardships he contracted rheumatic fever, which left him with a weak heart and after about six months in various hospitals, he was discharged unfit for further service. Immediately after the ceremony the newly-married pair left for London en route for Hastings for the honeymoon. |

1933-11-21 | trial at Banbury Police Court of Charles Young
Yeatman (19) and a 16-year-old girl; the girl was
charged with larceny, between 1st May and 5th October, from the residence of Mrs. Eva Margaret Herbert, of Holly House, Sibford Ferris, of one silver watch, one case of salt cellars, one blanket, a quantity of cutlery, towels, household linen, and utensils. Yeatman was further charged with receiving one blanket knowing it to have been stolen, between 1st May and 5th October, from the residence of Mrs. Eva Margaret Herbert, of Sibford Ferris. [ . . . ] Eva Margaret Herbert, Holly House, Sibford Ferris, wife of Roland Herbert, schoolmaster, said the female accused was employed by her for about five months up to 5th October, 1933. She returned on the following Thursday, 12th October, accompanied by Yeatman, and asked for a reference. All the articles produced, with the exception of the cream jug, belonged to witness. The prisoner had no authority to take the articles away. Both defendants were committed for trial at Oxford Quarter Sessions on 2nd January; bail for both was opposed, but Mr. Roland Herbert intimated his willingness to stand as surety for the female prisoner, and the Bench accordingly bound him over in the sum of £20, and ordered the girl to be detained in a home under the care of the Woman Probation Officer. The girl was bound over in the sum of £5. The magistrates ordered Yeatman to be kept in custody in Oxford Gaol. |
Banbury Advertiser, 1933-11-23 |
1934-01-02 | at Quarter Sessions (trial covered at length),
the girl was named as Susan Annette Turner: The two prisoners were then bound over to be of good behaviour for two years, and to come up for judgment if called upon. Addressing them, the Chairman said they had both behaved very badly, and had stolen from people who had been kind to them. They ought to make restitution where they could, and he hoped they would never come before the Court again. They consider themselves very fortunate in having been dealt with so leniently. |

1931-04-23 | with his wife, gave evidence at a trial for
dangerous driving, at Banbury County Police Court: Irene [sic] Gladys Lamb, wife of Frederick Joshua Lamb, of Sibford Ferris, stated that about 7 p.m. on the day in question she was with her husband near the front gate of her home, which was situated on the Sibford-Hook Norton Road. There was a motor-van belonging to Mr. Styles, baker, of Tysoe, standing in the road. There were several children round the van, five of whom were witness's. None of the children was over 11 years of age. The motor van was on the left side of the road facing Sibford Ferris, which was the same side as witness's house. The van was about 250 yards from the turning into Sibford Ferris. While witness was standing at the gate she heard a motor-cycle approaching towards her. There were no other vehicles on the road. "When the cyclist turned the corner," continued witness, "my husband warned the children to keep clear, and most of them got to the side of the road. One boy, however, who was between the van and the near side of the road did not appear to hear. The motor-cyclist came on at a fast pace and did not attempt to slow down or sound his horn. The boy stood still and in this way a serious accident was averted. There was very little room for the cyclist to pass, and if the boy had moved he would certainly have been knocked down. The motor-cyclist was the defendant, who passes that way every day." In reply to the Chairman, witness said it was quite light at the time. Replying to Mr. Blincowe, witness said the near side front door of the van was open and the child was stood looking into the van. The road was not level, but there was an incline all the way. Witness did not hear the motor-cyclist change gear, as nearly all motorists did, when climbing the hill. Fifty Miles an Hour. The next witness was Frederick Joshua Lamb, who said he was on the side of the road leading from Sibford Ferris to Hook Norton, at the time of the occurrence. The van was on the off-side of the road, facing Sibford Ferris, and it was standing 50 yards from witness's house. Witness shouted to the children to stand clear as soon as he heard the motor-cycle approaching. He was well-acquainted with the sound of Soden's cycle, owing to the speed at which he usually travelled. Supt. Hedges: What was his speed as he passed the motor-van? Witness: I estimate it at 50 miles an hour and I think there was four feet from the child to the side of the road for the defendant to pass. Proceeding, witness said the speed of the motor-cycle did not decrease at all, nor was the horn sounded. Witness was a motor-driver of long experience, and was a good judge of speed. Cross-examined by Mr. Blincowe, witness agreed that it was dangerous for children to play on the public highway. He thought a safe speed to pass the spot would be about 20 miles an hour. [defendant fined 10s. with £1 costs, and had his licence endorsed] |

1917-04-05 | at the Banbury Rural District Military Tribunal: Mr. Joshua Lamb, Sibford, farmer, applied for the absolute exemption of Bernard Watson Lamb (17), single, shepherd and general farm hand, on the ground that he would be unable properly to carry on his farm if any more of his employees were taken. The work was behind. He wanted to grow more potatoes than usual, and by purchasing a large quantity of artificial manure he was now preparing to augment the food supply as much as possible. His other three sons were in khaki. The farm was 320 acres and he grew a great deal of fruit, and his land was heavily stocked. Applicant said his son was 18 on April 1st. They ran a thrashing business and had a sheep swimming bath on the farm which was used by the neighbouring farmers. Exemption was given till June 1st and the applicant was asked to be medically examined in the meantime. |

1917-06-21 | at the Banbury Rural District Military Tribunal: Mr. Joshua Lamb, of Sibford, applied for the extension of the certificate of Bernard Watson Lamb (18), single, shepherd, general right hand man. He asked to keep his son till after the harvest. The son appeared and said the farm was 322 acres. Mr. Taylor said Mr. Lamb did most of the sheep washing in the neighbourhood. Exempted till October 1st. |

1917-09-27 | at the Banbury Rural District Military Tribunal: Application was made by Mr. Joshua Lamb, farmer and threshing machine proprietor, for absolute exemption for his son, Bernard Watson Lamb (18, single), shepherd and general right-hand man on the farm, who on the last occasion was exempted till 1st October. The reasons for the application were the same as before, and applicant could not see how he was to manage if his last son was taken away.—Mr. Lamb sent a letter giving particulars of his acreage and stock, the labour employed, and the extent of the work done in the threshing business.—The young man in respect to whom the application was made appeared, and said there were eight men and two boys employed, most of the men being elderly. His brother before joining up was employed on the farm.—Mr. J.S. Taylor said he did not see how Mr. Lamb could manage without the only son he had left.—The young man, who was passed for Class A., was exempted till the end of November. |

A Sibford Record Mr. Bernard Lamb, of Sibford Ferris, who has continued his father's practice of keeping meticulous weather records, sends us the following letter:— "The blizzard of March 4th and 5th was almost certainly the worst that has struck this district since 1881. Conditions at the Sibfords were certainly more severe than in the storm of March 28th, 1916. "My father, Joshua Lamb, wrote of the 1916 storm, 'Conditions in all ways were similar to the great storm of January 1881, except that then there were 10° of frost all the time, while today the thermometer stood at freezing point only.' "The 1916 storm left 1.03 inches of melted snow in the Gauge. Last weeks storm measured up to 1.30 inches. "Together with many other villages the Sibfords were completely cut off for some days. The Banbury road was the least drifted as it runs roughly East to West. All other roads out were heavily drifted over long distances. It is now seven weeks since the ground in this area has been clear of snow. I can find no record of snow cover lasting as long in this district before." |
