CONCERT FOR HOSPITAL FUND.—In aid of the big Hospital effort, a very enjoyable concert was given at the Co-operative Hall on Sunday evening by scholars of Trinity College, Cambridge (by kind permission of Trinity College of Music). The artistes were Miss Ella Essenhigh (soprano), Miss Katherine Knight, A.T.C.L. (pianoforte), and Mr. Bernard Gee (bass). [ . . . ] Miss Essenhigh has a voice of bird-like sweetness and under complete control. Her items were well chosen and very charmingly rendered. [ . . . ] A particularly pleasing number was the piano duet by Miss Essenhigh and Miss Knight, which secured a very warm encore. Recalls were frequent and generously responded to. Mr. Knight, at the interval, thanked "everybody" and announced that as a result of the effort it was expected that £10 would be added to the funds. |

Concert.—Those who braved the bitter weather to attend the concert given at Wesley Schoolroom, High Street, on the 2nd instant, were rewarded with a feast of excellent music and entertainment. The concert was under the direction of Mr. Harry Thurston, of Chatham, who, with a party of six other talented artistes, gave their services for the "Blitzed Churches Fund." The artistes were Reg. Clare (violin), Ella Essenhigh (piano). Marie Hickson (soprano), Burt Smith (tenor), Elsie Thurston (contralto). Harry Thurston (baritone), and Irene Weller (elocution). All are members of Mr. Leslie Mackay's choir, so, as expected, singing filled a large part of the programme; quartettes, duets, and solos, both serious and humorous, being extremely well sung; in fact every item gave the utmost pleasure. Mr. Reg. Clare submitted a varied and pleasing selection of violin solos [ . . . ] Miss Ella Essenhigh's sympathetic accompanying was a feature throughout, and deserves special commendation. This concert party will not quickly be forgotten, and it is hoped that a return visit can be arranged. |
