NARROW ESCAPE AT SIDMOUTH. PLUCKY RESCUE FROM DROWNING. A little girl, named Doris Riggs, daughter of Mr. E. Riggs, of Easterntown, Sidmouth, had a narrow escape from drowning on Saturday. She was playing with some companions in the Ham Field, near the river Sid, when she accidentally fell into the water. The screams of her companions attracted Mr. W. Barnard, who plunged into the river, and, with some difficulty, succeeded in rescuing the child. She was conveyed to the house of Mr. W. Manley, Dr. Stokes being summoned. Artificial respiration was resorted to, and, after about an hour, she recovered consciousness. Great credit is due to Barnard, who is nearly 70 years of age, for the courage he displayed, as the river is at present in full flood. |

LIVING AT SIDMOUTH WIFE'S SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION AT PLYMOUTH Doris Joan Ward applied at Plymouth Police Court yesterday for a separation order against her husband, John Ward, hawker, of Summerland-street, Plymouth, on the ground of alleged persistent cruelty. Mr. J.L. Wolferstan, for complainant, said defendant had ill-used her. She was now living with her parents at Sidmouth. Mary Jane Riggs, of Arcot Park, Sidmouth, mother of applicant, bore out Mr. Wolferstan's statement. Defendant denied that he ever used violence against his wife, blamed his mother-in-law for the trouble, and said he would not maintain her while she lived with her mother. It was stated that defendant was receiving 24s. a week disability pension and could earn enough to make it up to £2 a week. The Court made an order for 10s. a week. |
