LOCAL DIAMOND WEDDING Mr and Mrs Herbert Evans who reside at Culmer, Raglan-road, Reigate celebrated their diamond wedding on Monday when they received many congratulatory telegrams, which were still being delivered when I met them that afternoon. Aged respectively 84 and 82, they were married at Haslemere Parish Church on June 18th, 1896. Mr. Evans' father, Edmund Evans, born in 1826, founded the well known firm of printers and publishers of the same name in 1847 and was the originator of high-class children's picture books illustrated with wood engravings. The firm carried on business in Racquet Court, off Fleet-street, and when Mr. Herbert Evans, who entered his father's business, retired two years ago, he and his wife came to live in Reigate. Mrs. Evans is the third daughter of the late Mr. Frank Holl, R.A., who was renowned for his portraiture. He began painting when he was quite young and when he died at the early age of 42 he left almost a fortune. He painted Edward VII as Prince of Wales and many notabilities. Mr. and Mrs. Evans had four children, three boys and a girl, of whom two are living. The eldest son, killed at the Relief of Kut, Mesopotamia, in 1916, was mentioned in dispatches; the died at the age of eighteen and the third is married and lives in Australia. The daughter, Mrs. F. A. Garrett, lives in Reigate. Despite his age, Mr. Evans, who is very fond of sport, may often be seen playing golf at Reigate Heath |

Possessing a swing that must be the envy of many golfers half his age, Mr. Herbert Evans, of Culmer, Raglan-road, Reigate, celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday by playing four holes at Reigate Heath—in 20 strokes! Mr. Evans, a retired master printer, been a devoted golfer for over half a century and was formerly captain of the West Byfleet club. He still plays regularly at Reigate and even indulges in a little "secret" practice at a net in his delightful garden. In June Mr. and Mrs. Evans celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. |
