GATESHEAD WOMEN'S TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION. A successful gardem party was held in the Red House, Durham Road, Gateshead, at the kind invitation of Mr. and Mrs. F. Emley. About 180 members and friends were present, and all enjoyed the perfect weather and lovely surroundings. A short meeting was held, presided over by Mrs. Spence Watson, who spoke of the need for Temperance work in war-time, and of the splendid way in which the Cambridge and Bedford branches of the B.W.T.A. had organised refreshments for soldiers on a huge scale. Mrs. Fryer, President for Durham County, gave a most encouraging address, and Miss Mawson, President of the Gateshead Branch, thanked both speakers very heartily. By the sale of cakes, sweets, jam, flowers, etc., and by some generous donations, the aunt of £12 12s. was realised in aid of the Motor Kitchens which are being sent by the B.W.T.A. to the front to supply hot or cold drinks and extra food to soldiers. After tea, games and talk on the lawn were continued. |

RESIGNATION OF MR HUGH C. WATSON. The annual meeting of the Northumberland Lawn Tennis Association was held last light in the Turk's Head Hotel, Newcastle, under the chairmanship of the President, Mr T.D. Straker Smith, who, in the course of his remarks anent the annual report, announced the retirement of the hon. secretary, Mr Hugh C. Watson, who has occupied that position for 14 years, and has had intimate connexion with the Association over a period of 16 years. Mr Straker Smith said that the Association owed a deep debt of gratitude to Mr Watson for the enormous amount of time and hard work he had devoted to its affairs both as hon. secretary and as county representative on the Council of the L.T.A. Mr Watson had had the satisfaction of contributing in no small degree to the inauguration of a new era in the history of the Association (the establishment of the permanent head-quarters of the game in Northumberland at the Jesmond County Lawn Tennis Ground). Subsequently, on the proposition of Mr Straker Smith, seconded by Mr R.M. Sutton, Mr H.C. Watson was elected an honorary life member of the committee of the Association, and a vote of thanks from the meeting ordered to be entered upon the minutes. |

A NEWCASTLE WEDDING _____ MR NOEL BRADY WATSON AND MISS JANET HEADS. ____ Yesterday, in St. James' Congregational Church, Newcastle, there was solemnised, in the presence of a large assembly, the marriage of Mr Noel Brady, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Edward Watson of Low Fell, to Miss Janet Heads, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Heads of Newcastle. The Rev T. Lawton Platt was the officiating minister. The bride wore an ivory satin grenadine gown, with skirt gracefully draped in front, trimmed with tulle and silken tassel, and coatee of shadow and guipure lace; and she carried a shower bouquet of white carnations and lily of the valley. Two of the bridesmaids, Miss Gladys and Ella Heads, sisters of the bride, wore dresses of pink satin grenadine, combined with helio-ninon waistbands, and bodices and coatees of cream guipure lace; they carried shower bouquets of pink carnations and lily of the valley, and wore gifts of the bridegroom, respectively a gold curb bangle and chain and pendant. The two younger bridesmaids, Miss May Emley and Miss Elise Watson, nieces of the bridegroom, wore dainty frocks of cream net over cream silk, trimmed with shell pink ribbons, and net bonnets to match. They carried baskets of pink carnations, and wore pearl brooches, the gifts of the bridegroom. Mrs Heads, mother of the bride, was dressed in a gown of French violet velvet, the bodice draped with coffee and gold lace, and wore a black French tagel hat, with large ostrich feathers, and carried a bouquet of pink English lilies. Mrs Watson, mother of the bridegroom, was dressed in a helio satin gown, the bodice worked with beaded trimming. She wore a bonnet of silver grey, and carried a bouquet of pink and white tulips. The bridesmaids' hats were of helio broche silk trimmed with pale pink and lined with black tulle, with chin-straps of black velvet. Master Eric Wainwright carried the bride's cushion, and was dressed in black velvet and cream silk. Mr Robert Hudson acted as best man, and Mr. T. Heads, jun., as groomsman. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Minories Assembly Rooms, and the newly married pair left for Torquay. The bride's going-away costume was of Parma violet cloth, with waistcoat effect, in brocaded silk. She wore, also, a large blue wolf fur the gift of the bridegroom, and her hat was to match the costume, being in soft flowered crepe trimmed with pink roses and Parma violets. |
