A FRIENDS' WEDDING. At the little Friends' Meeting-house at Little Broughton. Cumberland, yesterday, the wedding took place of Mr Henry Bowman Watson, only son of Thomas Carrick Watson, of Newcastle, to Miss Sarah Emily Harris, second daughter of Mr Thomas Mason Harris. Westworth, Papcastle, member of an old family of Cumberland Friends, whose linen mills are one of the industrial mainstays of Cockermouth. Miss Harris was married on the anniversary of her father's marriage 34 years ago, and in the interval there has been no wedding in the Meeting-house, there being very few families of Friends in the district. A wedding, according to the custom of the Society of Friends, practically consists of a solemn declaration by each of the contracting parties followed by the signing of the marriage certificate by bridegroom and bride, their parents, and any Friends present who wish. In this case the certificate was printed in red and black, on vellum. It was read by Mr William Henry Wilson, Broughton Grange. Later in the afternoon the bridal couple left for Scotland, where the honeymoon will be spent. |

QUAKER WEDDING AT BROUGHTON. INTERESTING COINCIDENCE. For the second time in the long space of 34 years the Quaker meeting house at Little Broughton, Cumberland, was on Wednesday the scene of a marriage. The contracting parties, who are both members of the Society of Friends, were Mr. Henry Bowman Watson, only son of Mr. Thomas Garrick [sic] Watson, of Glengrae, Jesmond Park, West Newcastle, and Miss Sarah Emily Harris, Wentworth, Papcastle, a member of a very old and respected family of Cumberland Friends. Mr. Harris is a managing director of the mills which are one of the industrial mainstays of Cockermouth. He was formerly president of the Cockermouth Division Liberal Association, but resigned his office shortly after the death of the late Sir Wilfrid Lawson, of whom he was a loyal friend and devoted admirer. It is an interesting coincidence to note that Miss Harris was married on the anniversary of her father's wedding 34 years ago, and that there has been no wedding in the meeting house during the interval. A wedding solemnised according to the custom of the Society of Friends is unlike that of any other denomination. It practically consists of a declaration made by each of the contracting parties, and the signing of the marriage certificate by bridegroom and bride, their four parents, and any of the friends present at the ceremony who wish. The certificate in this case was handsomely printed in black and red on vellum. It was read by Mr. W.H. Wilson, Broughton Grange. The declaration made by the bridegroom was as follows:—"In the fear of the Lord, and in the presence of this assembly, I take my friend, Sarah Emily Harris, to be my wife, promising through Divine assistance, to be unto her a loving and faithful husband, until it shall please the Lord by death to separate us." The bride on her part made a similar declaration with the necessary alterations. |
