A TOURIST AGENT AND HIS DEBTS.At the London Bankruptcy Court on Wednesday, a sitting was held before Mr Registrar Murray, for the public examination of Mr O H Caygill, who is well known in Wakefield. It will be remembered that the debtor was, prior to November last, the proprietor of "Caygill's Tours" in the Strand, having numerous branches all over the country. The accounts filed by the debtor show liabilities £33,464 2s. 9d., of which £3956 16s. is unsecured, the assets being estimated at the same amount. From the preliminary examination of the debtor, it appeared that he commenced business five-and-a-half years ago in Leeds. In January, 1883, he entered into partnership with Mr C E Brightwen, who carried on a separate business in Leeds as a grocer. Brightwen brought £3000 into the concern as capital, and he was to receive a quarter share of this profits of the business. That partnership had been dissolved by mutual consent, end Mr Brightwen had once failed, his whereabouts being unknown. Mr Bowen, on behalf of the trustee, stated that shortly before the failure the business had been sold to a united company, and the assets set out be the debtor consisted of the value of the shares which had been given to him for the purchase of the business. BRIGHTWEN, CHARLES EDWARD (at A. 18605), son of Charles and Hannah (Rowntree) Brightwen, was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne 27th of Seventh Month, 1850. His mother died in 1853, and his father in 1858. Under the care of his uncle, the late John Rowntree, he and his sister lived at Scarborough for some time. While at Ackworth he took a great interest in the then "Society of Arts," and carried off many prizes for pencil drawings. After Ackworth he was at Bootham School, York, for a year and a half. At Christmas, 1866, he was apprenticed to the grocery business with his uncle, John Rowntree, of Scarborough, and remained with him till his health broke down in 1870, when the doctor, fearing consumption, ordered a long sea voyage. Accordingly he went in a sailing vessel to Australia and other parts. This voyage proved of great benefit, as there was no return afterwards of the affection of the lungs. His faculty for making friends was a great help to him in his travels. Wit health fairly established he was successively in the employ of Benjamin Candler of Littlehampton, Samuel Fox Armitage of Nottingham, and Henry King of York. After these, he settled in business for himself in Leeds, where he was attacked with rheumatic fever, and had a long and dangerous illness. In 1877 he married Lucy Broadhead, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Broadhead of Leeds. He had the misfortune to lose his entire capital by an investment with a London firm. A post was then made for him by his brother-in-law, Walter J. Kaye, M.A., of Ilkley College. Here he remained for nine years, his cheery happy manner and the thorough heartiness which he threw into the interests of the boys made him always popular. On W.J. Kaye returning to Harrogate, C.E. Brightwen continued to reside in Ilkley. His health again began to fail, and he was ordered to a warmer climate for the winter of 18945. Accompanied by his wife, he spent the cold months in Egypt. This prolonged his life for a time, but he gradually relapsed, until in Tenth Month, 1895, he was confined to bed, under great weakness and suffering; yet his restful, bright and happy spirit allowed no word of murmuring or impatience to escape him. He lingered till twentieth of Second Month, 1896, when he passed gently and peacefully away in his forty-sixth year. |
