. . . the chairman announced that it was his pleasing duty to present an illuminated address to the Rev Hugh F. Watson, the curate, on the occasion of his leaving the parish for another sphere of labour. He stated that no jar of any sort had arisen between himself and Mr Watson during the 2½ years Mr Watson had been his colleague and fellow-helper; and that circumstance was, to him, most gratifying. (Great cheering).

Mr Henry Wharton also spoke of the excellent character of Mr Watson, and of his great ability as a young clergyman in the pulpit. He was sure that deep regret would be felt by all, on the occasion of his leaving, and that the best wishes of the Whole parish would go with him.

The address, which had been beautifully done by Mr Alfred Lyles, and handsomely framed by Mr. Brook, the churchwarden, was then presented to Mr Watson, who briefly replied, expressing the high value he should set upon it, and stating that the presentation was utterly unexpected by him.

THE NEW VICAR OF ST. RAPHAEL'S

The Rev. Hugh Fawcett Watson has been offered and has accepted the living of St. Raphael's, Cumberland Road. The new vicar obtained his B.A. at Oxford in the Michaelmas term, 1882, his M.A. in 1887, having gained honours in theology. He was ordained deacon in 1883 by Bishop Hellmuth (late Bishop of Huron, for the Bishop of Ripon), and was licensed to the curacy of Batley-Carr, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. In the following year he was ordained by the Bishop of Ripon, and in 1896 he was appointed curate at Holy Nativity, Knowle, on the nomination of the Hon. and Rev. A.F.B. Hanbury Tracy, and from 1889 he has been in charge of the mission church of St Katherine in that parish. The patrons of St. Raphael's are the Council of Keble College, Oxford. The income of the living is £130 per annum.

The new vicar of St. Raphael's, the Rev Hugh F. Watson, referred to in "The Talk of Bristol" last week, has made a host of friends at Knowle during the 14 years he has had charge of St. Katharine's in that parish, which he gave up without any pecuniary advantage for the more important duties of the vicar of St. Raphael's. In a quiet and unostentatious way he has gradually, from the smallest beginnings, developed and built up the Church of St. Katharine, Knowle, and by unselfish and self-sacrificing work amongst the people of Knowle and Pylle hill he has won their sincere regard and lasting friendship. It is not therefore surprising that they have not permitted him to leave the scene of these prolonged labours without a tangible mark of their esteem and affection for him. At a gathering and concert in St. Katharine's Church school, arranged by Miss Ward, the honorary organist, he was presented with a library chair, purse of £40, and a stationery case from members of St. Katharine's and friends at Knowle, the stationery case bearing the inscription:—"Presented, with a chair and purse of money, to the Rev H.F. Watson by many friends on his leaving St. Katharine's, Knowle, as a token of esteem and affection; 15th February, 1900." With these gifts was an album containing the names of the contributors, numbering 241. From the teachers and children of the Sunday school Mr Watson was the recipient of a brass inkstand and pen, and a pair of brass candlesticks. The presentation was made in appropriate terms by the Rev. George Dunlop, who said they respected Mr Watson not only for the length of his service and its conspicuous success, but because of the ability he had displayed in building up that mission church and in administering to the sick, his indefatigable district visiting, and his tender regard for the young. Mr Watson feelingly acknowledged the gifts, and thanked all for their exceeding kindness.
