ALLEGED WHOLESALE RECEIPT OF STOLEN PROPERTY. John Gardner, a club manager, of 105, Central-street, St. Luke's, was charged at Clerkenwell Police-court yesterday with feloniously receiving 150 umbrellas, value £140, the property of Frederick Bale, well knowing them to have been stolen. The prosecutor, an umbrella manufacturer of 89, Tottenham-court-road, said that on Friday evening, the 10th inst., his premises were broken into and 150 umbrellas were stolen. On Thursday evening, the 16th inst., he went with the police to the prisoner's premises, and there saw 85 umbrellas, which he identified as part of the stolen property. He then went to a clergyman's house near by, and there saw five more umbrellas, which he also identified. While he was there the prisoner came in, and in answer to questions stated that he had bought the umbrellas, about 100 in number, from a man who had brought them to his house in a cab. He was then taken into custody. A servant at the Vicarage, King's-square, Goswell-road, stated that on Thursday morning the prisoner called at the Vicarage and showed her five umbrellas, which he said he would sell for 10s. each, though they were worth from 25s. to 30s. each. He left the umbrellas and said he would call again. When he did so the police and prosecutor were at the house, and he was arrested. The prisoner was remanded. |
