MILITARY TRIBUNAL.—GERMAN PRISONERS AND THEIR BREAD SUPPLY.—The Mayor presided at a meeting of this body on Friday afternoon.—The Co-operative Society appealed for Richard John Ferry, 2, Manor-place, Portland, bread baker, who had been given temporary exemption until July 31st.—The military said there were no special grounds for any extension.—Mr. A.H. Oakley (managing secretary) pointed out that the Company were carrying out important military contracts and supplying the prisoners of war camp.—Mr. Clarke: I cannot understand why they cannot bake their own bread.—Exemption was granted until August 31st, and no further appeal.

FEMALES AND NIGHT WORK.—Richard J. Ferry, Manor-place, Portland, bread baker, was appealed for by the Weymouth and District Co-operative Society on the ground that Army contracts were in hand for troops in addition to the ordinary business. It was urged that it was not possible to get men, for this kind of work, as night shifts were worked. Females had been engaged for work in the bakery by day, but they could not be engaged to assist in the night shifts, the work being too hard and the hours too long. It was urged in response that a man of non-military age could be secured for the work in question, and the appeal was dismissed.

Western Gazette, 1916-09-22
1916-10-21 at the Dorset County Tribunal, sitting at Weymouth Guildhall:

A LENGTHY EXEMPTION.—Richard John Ferry (37), baker for the Weymouth Co-operative Society, was represented by Mr. R.A. Logan.—The Secretary of the Society stated that Ferry's services were mostly required for the carrying out of Army contracts.—Conditional exemption was granted until the 31st March.
