m. Lucy Ann Drewett (18251901, of Hannington,
d. of John and Mary Drewett), at Hannington
On Monday, July 31st,
Stephen Baggs, for 45 years parish clerk of Hannington, entered into
rest, aged 74 years. All the years that he was clerk until his last
illness he never, except on two occasions (once from sickness and once
because of absence from home), missed attendance at any Sunday services
in the church; and the same conscientious discharge of duty was found in
his everyday life. As husband, father, friend, and neighbour he was kind
and considerate, honest and upright in all his dealings. Religion with
him was no empty profession, but was carried into his daily life. His
familiar face and voice will be greatly missed in our parish church, and
those who knew him will feel that a good man has passed away from us.
The funeral took place on Thursday, August 3rd, at Hannington church.
The service was conducted by the Rector, Rev. F.J. Thompson, assisted by
Rev. W.V. Sanlez, Vicar of Thorley, Isle of Wight. All the members of
the choir who were able were present. A hymn was sung in church and
another at the grave. And now his body rests in the quiet churchyard,
where he himself, during the 45 years of his clerkship, had reverently
laid to rest so many who had gone before him.
