1896-09-24 | at Borough Petty Sessions: AN OLD OFFENDER.Edwin James Cox, of Weymouth, was charged with having stolen three drag shoes, of the value of 7s 6d., the property of Alfred James Ferry, a wheelwright. Mr. H.A. Huxtable (assistant town clerk) prosecuted. P.S. Morris said on September 22nd he was on duty in Gloucester Mews at 8.30 p.m. He there saw prisoner and stopped him, as he noticed he had something under his arm. He asked him what he had, when he said it was a drag shoe. Witness asked him to account for it, as it was a new and unfinished article, upon which he replied "I have been to Eli Hatchard's, at Wyke, for it, and am going to take it to my brother's, where I had it about three months ago." Witness told him the explanation was not satisfactory and he should take him into custody. He cautioned him, when he replied "I have told you the truth," and asked him to go and see his brother. He did so and, in consequence of that he was told, returned to the police station and locked prisoner up. On Wednesday morning he went to Alfred James Ferry, a wheelwright, of Weymouth, and in his yard saw about a dozen drag shoes, which were exactly like the one stolen, and bore the mark "W" on each. Alfred James Ferry, a wheelwright, carrying on business in Lower St. Edmund-street, said that in consequence of what the last witness told him on Wednesday, he showed him several drag shoes, all of which were marked with the letter "W" in chalk. They were placed in the yard on Friday last. The shoe produced was his property. He had missed four from the heap placed in the yard, and believed two more now produced were also his property. Prisoner here stated that these shoes had been taken from Ferry's yard five or six weeks ago. P.C. Martin said he found these shoes in the possession of Tom Willis, Queen-street. Chief Constable Eacock said that morning he saw prisoner in his cell on going his usual round of duty, when he made a voluntary statement to him. He said "I sold Jonathan Cook two shoes, one for 1s. 1d. and one for 1s. I was on my way with the other one when Sergeant Morris stopped me. I stole them from Ferry's yard, and I hope you will ask the magistrates to deal lightly with me, and I will never touch another drop of drink." Mr. Huxtable asked the Bench to commit the prisoner for trial. As previous convictions were produced the magistrates committed the prisoner for trial at the ensuing sessions. Mr. Huxtable then applied for a Bench summons against Jonathan Cook, cab proprietor, for being the receiver of stolen goods, and asked that it should be made returnable on Friday. The application was granted. |

of embezzlement and forgery by an Oddfellows' Secretary: Henry Walter Ferry, one of the trustees of the lodge, said when any money was owing from his lodge to another for sick pay it was the duty of the secretary of such lodge to bring the matter forward, and orders were then made out for payment to the lodge so indebted. There was no entry in the book produced of the £9 15s. said to have been paid to John Collis. The paper produced bore the seal of the Gibraltar Lodge, and was dated November 28th, 1874, showing the Weymouth Lodge was indebted to them in the amount of sick pay which they had paid Collis. |

1876-07-07 | gave evidence in a smuggling case, at a special
meeting of the borough magistrates: Henry Walter Ferry, outdoor Custom-house officer, said he was placed on board the ship when she came into Weymouth. Prisoners were about to leave the vessel on the opposite side where he (Mr. Ferry) was standing and he called out to them to stoop. Searched Rogers and found on him 5lb. of manufactured tobacco. 8lb. were found upon Stone. [ . . . ] The evidence given on the former occasion was read over and confirmed, in addition to which Walter Ferry, out-door officer of Customs, said no one on board the steamers was allowed 1lb. of tobacco for his own consumption; they were only allowed Όlb. |

1878-10-12 | gave evidence at the Guildhall to an inquest into
the death of Henry Augustus Curtis, a Custom-house officer who had
drowned in the harbour the previous night: Mr. Henry Walter Ferry, examining officer of Customs, said deceased was the senior out-door officer of Customs. Deceased took charge of the harbour at six p.m. on Friday, and he would have been relieved at midnight. It would be his duty to call him if any ships arrived from foreign parts. He visited deceased at the watch-house at ten minutes past ten o'clock. It was deceased's duty to take the high water at the graduated scale near the steps opposite the Custom-house. It was high water last night between twenty minutes and half-past ten o'clock. In his opinion deceased met with his death in leaning over from the steps to take the high water, and he thought the blow in his head was caused by striking against a punt lying near the steps. He was of opinion that deceased met with his death accidentally whilst performing his duty. Deceased had been over 29 years in the service, and he was always reported as a very good officer. |
