1903-06-22 | at Sheerness Police Court: Thomas Lynch, gunner, of the R.G.A., Sheerness, was charged with stealing 15s. belonging to Charles Thomas Jarvis, picture framer, of 320, High Street Chatham. [ . . . ] Prosecutor deposed that on Wednesday, June 17, he came down to Sheerness, along with the Chatham Tradesmen Club, to play cricket against the R.G.A. On entering the pavilion at the Well Marsh he changed his clothes and put on a white outfit for the occasion, leaving from 15s. to 20s. in silver and copper in the pockets of his trousers. At the conclusion of the match, when he went to re-dress, he discovered that all his money had gone. The sergeant, to whom he gave information, said he would report the matter. He returned home that night and did not hear any more of the affair until the major wrote him saying that the case would be proceeded with and that the man suspected of the robbery was under arrest. He could not recognise prisoner at all, but would swear that one of the shillings in the coins produced belonged to him. [ . . . ] As it was a first offence, Lynch was sent to prison for one month. |

a prominent business man in the Medway towns; had a passion for football and was actively involved in the Chatham football club | daughter's Drake & Son obituary | |

The many people throughout the Medway Towns who knew Mr. Charles Thomas Jarvis, of 197, Gillingham Road, Gillingham an old established business man and father of one of Gillingham's Borough councillors, will regret to learn of his death in hospital on Thursday in last week at the age of 70. Affectionately known as Charlie Jarvis, he was born at the house in Chatham High Street, where his own father conducted the glass and picture frame business which he was later to take over. As a lad he went to St. Paul's School, and on leaving became employed at the Axe Brand Works, the former clothing factory situated in Gillingham where the Grand Cinema now is. It was then that his long and enthusiastic association with Chatham Football Club began, at the time when the Club was named after a weekly periodical "The Boys of England." Most of the members were drawn from the Axe Brand Works, and one of them was Ald. H.J. Stearne, of Chatham. Mr. Jarvis had always taken a very great interest in Wednesday Football, and it was in these early days, when he was honorary secretary of the Club, that he formed a very successful Chatham Wednesday Football Club. * * * In 1905, 1906 and 1907 they were the winners of practically all the Wednesday competitions in the district, including the Kent Mid-Week Wednesday Cup presented by the K.C.F.A. They also competed in the Chatham and District Wednesday League competition, winning it in 1907 and 1908. With Mr. H.J. Payne, Ald. E.G. Maynard, and Mr. B. E.J. Billinghurst, Mr. Jarvis, in 1909, helped to resuscitate the Club, which went from strength to strength until in 1914 it reached what was then the first round proper of the English Cup Competition, playing Sunderland at Roker Park. Then war came, and Mr. Jarvis served with the Royal Artillery in France. But football was resumed at Chatham immediately after hostilities ceased, and it was not long before the Club won the Kent Victory Cup at Maidstone, with such prominent men as George Hilsdon playing for the local team. Mr. Jarvis continued as a director of the Club until it became defunct about ten years after the war. * * * Right up to his death he remained an authority on football, and was ready to help the Club in any way he could. He was considered a very good judge of a footballer, with a gift for unearthing talent on the field. Apart from sport, he was deeply involved in politics. For over 40 years he was secretary of St. Mary's Ward, Chatham, Conservative Association dating back to the days when the late Sir Gerald Hohler, K.C., was Member for Chatham. In later years he worked for Colonel J.T.C. Brabazon, now Lord Brabazon of Tara, when he fought his election campaigns here. At the time of his death Mr. Jarvis was still a member of the old Chatham Local Guardians and Trustees of the Poor. It was on the death of his father 50 years ago that he took over the glass and picture frame business in Chatham, which he had conducted very successfully ever since. Before the 1914-18 war he dealt direct with travellers from Belgium, buying the very famous Belgian glass. Mr. Jarvis leaves a widow, a son, Councillor Norman Jarvis who represents North Ward on Gillingham Borough Council, two daughters and a grandson. He is survived by three brothers and four sisters.
