Gallantry Gains Former Monkseaton Man M.C. CAPTAIN Philip Joseph Spence Watson, of the 1st Battalion of the Border Regiment, formerly of Monkseaton, has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in Palestine. The decoration is conferred upon Captain Watson for conspicuous courage and ability during a round-up of enemy rebels. He was in command of platoons which were ordered to surround rebels during darkness. The action entailed movement for some miles over extremely difficult and hilly country. ENTIRE GANG CAUGHT Contact was made and all the rebels were either killed or captured. Capt Watson is a son of the late Mr Joseph Stanhope Watson and Mrs Watson, who lived at Monkseaton for many years; and a grandson of the late Mr Joseph Watson of Gateshead, brother of the late Dr. Robert Spence Watson, a well known Newcastle solicitor and leading member of the Northern Liberal Federation. After the death of his father, Capt. Watson's mother removed to Harrogate where she now resides. Mr Kenneth Watson and Miss Watson, of Rosella Place, North Shields and the Misses Clephan of Tynemouth are his cousins. |
