[. . . ] served with the 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment in North West Europe. He landed in Normandy about three weeks after D-Day and commanded HQ company. I believe he served right up to the end of the war, which the Manchesters finished in the bombed out ruins of Hamburg. |

MARRIAGE OF MISS V. M. LAKE Ceremony at St Anselm’s End A wedding that attracted a large gathering took place at St. Anselm's Church, Hatch End, on Saturday, when Miss Veronica Mary Lake, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cuthbert Lake, of Alderton, Rovston Park-road, Hatch End, was married to Anthony Clapham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Clapham, of 22, Westbury-road, Hatch End. The Rev F.T. Lewis, the vicar of St. Anselms; the Rev. H. Clapham Foster, cousin of the bridegroom, and the Rev. C. Shepherd Gibbs were the officiating clergy and Mr. James Clapham, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Given away by her father, the bride was gowned in a picture dress of white chiffon with short puff sleeves over a taffeta under-dress, trimmed with fichu of old Carrickmacross lace. A posy of orange blossom was in front and flounces of chiffon and lace at the hem. The family wedding veil of Carrickmacross lace was held in place with a wreath of orange blossom. The bride carried a bouquet of lilies-of-the-valley, white carnations and white heather. The bridal attendants were the Misses Cynthia and Audrey Lake, sisters of the bride; Miss Esther Clapham, cousin of the bridegroom; Mrs. Nancy Padfield and Miss Mary Caddick; they wore dresses of apricot moiré, reversible satin cut on renaissance lines with sashes of brown velvet and neckline trimmed with brown velvet, bound with gold cord: bands to match were worn in the hair. They held bouquets of carnations to tone with their dresses. The mother of the bride was attired in a picture frock of grey moiré and pale blue satin, and carried a bouquet of iris and pale pink African heather, whilst the mother of the bridegroom chose a blue brocade crèpe de chine dress and held a bouquet of yellow orchids and grape hyacinths. The reception was held at St. Anselm's Hall, Hatch End, where a large party assembled, and amongst those present were:— Sir William and Lady Foster, Lady Maddocks, Mr. Michael Clapham, Miss Chapman, Mr. H.
