The most earnest man on the spot is Mr Philip Corder, of York. Tell Mr Corder there is a Roman fort underfoot and he will dig for days and be amply satisfied if he finds a couple of broken bowls and the sunken lines of a Roman ditch. I sincerely admire Mr Corder's enthusiasm. But the questions he has to answer—poor Mr Corder! |

SUNDERLAND BRIDE MISS JOAN CORDER MARRIED AT ILKLEY SCENE OF PARENTS' QUAKER WEDDING The wedding took place at the Friends' Meeting House, Ilkley, to-day, of Miss Joan Corder, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Corder, of 1 Carlton Terrace, Sunderland, and Mr Kenneth R. Pumphrey, son of Mr and Mrs T.W. Pumphrey, of Preston Patrick Hall, Milnthorpe, Westmorland. As both the bride and bridegroom's families are Quakers, the service followed the lines of the Society of Friends' ceremony. Ilkley was chosen for the wedding by Miss Corder and Mr Pumphrey because their parents were married there, and to-day their fathers wore the ties and gloves which they used on the occasion of their marriages 40 years ago. The Quakers' marriage solemnization is totally different from that observed in churches. It takes the form of a meeting, and there is no minister. THE DECLARATION Bride and bridegroom rise in front of the gathering and each makes a declaration to the effect that each takes the other as in marriage. Usually one or two of the company speak, there are prayers, but no hymns. There is, of course, the signing of forms and the register. Miss Corder looked charming in a gown of a delicate shade of delphinium blue Liberty silk, beige hat and stockings, and light lizard shoes. Her bouquet was of varied coloured Michaelmas daisies. She had as bridesmaids four young nieces—Miss Barbara Longstreth Thompson, the Misses Mary and Ann Longstreth Thompson (twins), and Miss Richenda Corder. They were prettily attired in Liberty design Indian silk, and carried bouquets of posies. Mrs Corder was dressed in grey crepe-de-Chine, and the bridegroom's mother in black silk. Mr York Mellanby, of Hartburn, Stockton-on-Tees, was best man. Members of the 8th Sunderland Grange Rangers, of which the bride is captain, formed a guard of honour outside the Meeting House. There were 130 guests at the wedding, and a reception was held at Wells House Hotel, Ilkley. The host of handsome gifts included some from New Zealand, Holland, Austria, and Poland. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Pumphrey are spending their honeymoon on a motoring tour. |
