DIAMOND CELEBRATION AT MISSENDEN Prominent in the village where, until 20 years ago, they kept a greengrocery store, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Woolford, of 63, Church Street, Great Missenden, celebrated their diamond wedding on Friday. Spending the day quietly at home they were visited by their family and friends. They have two sons and two daughters, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mr. and Mrs. Woolford, who are now respectively 85 and 84 years old, were married at St. Paul's Church, Hemel Hempstead. Well-known for his long connection with the Great Missenden Parish Church, Mr. Woolford was for 70 years a member of the choir and for fifty years a bellringer, also serving as Parish Clark. Though now unable to attend services, Mr. Woolford still takes an interest in its affairs. Mrs. Woolford is still remarkably active and capably manages household duties without assistance. |

1921-12-12 | at the Sessions in Great Missenden: The Second Time: A Bad Case. Eleanor A. Langston, a married woman, of Prestwood, was summoned for stealing two ten shilling treasury notes at Great Missenden. Looking pale and worried, and obviously not well, defendant pleaded "guilty" and spoke in such a low tone that the police sergeant had to inform the Bench what she said. Gilbert Ernest Woolford, greengrocer, Great Missenden, stated that money was missed from the till in the shop, and having their suspicions, they set a trap with marked notes and defendant was caught with the notes in her possession. Mrs. Mary Jane Woolford, wife of prosecutor, stated that at 2.45 in the afternoon of Friday, December 9th, Mrs. Langston called at the shop and was served with vegetables. She asked for sage, and that had to be procured from the garden. Witness went out of one door as if going for the sage and then darted back, but short as her absence from the shop was defendant got at the till and abstracted the two marked notes, and closed the till again. P.C. Gale gave corroborative evidence. Supt. Wootton stated that four years ago (December, 1917) defendant was charged with stealing meat from a shop at Prestwood and was bound over in the sum of £5. She was a married woman with a family: her husband was in regular employment and earning good money, and there was no reason for defendant's action from the point of view of poverty. The Chairman said it was a very bad case, especially as defendant had a husband to work for her. If she had not young children, she would have been sent to prison. Defendant would be fined 40s. or one month. |
