DEATH OF MR. THOMAS NICKALLS.

A WELL KNOWN ASHFORDIAN.

We regret to have to record that on Monday last there passed from our midst Mr. Thomas Nickalls, late of Queens-road, Ashford, but formerly of Clock House, Beaver, at the advanced age of 93. Mr. Nickalls was a Man of Kent, born in Ashford in the year 1819. By his death one of the few remaining links is broken with what was to all intents and purposes a different age. He had lived in the reigns of six sovereigns, for George III. was on the throne at the time of his birth. Waterloo had been fought and won but four years before, Napoleon was still alive, the railway and the telegraph were things of the future. The Government of the country was entirely in the hands of the well-to-do. Socialism, votes for women, teetotalism and many another now burning question had not been even thought of.

Mr. Nickalls' forbears were Ashfordians for generations before he was born. Daniel Nickalls, his grandfather, was a native of Ashford in 1740. His son (also Daniel), father of Thomas Nickalls, was a much respected townsman for many years before his death in 1822. He left five children, of whom our worthy late neighbour was the youngest but one. He was educated at a school at Croydon founded and maintained by the Society of Friends, of which he was a staunch member. At an early age, as was then the custom, he was apprenticed to William Knight, of Halstead, Essex, to learn the mysteries of watchmaking, at that time purely a handicraft, and one in which he became thoroughly proficient. Thence he went to Reigate and took a business, undertaking also the position and work of postmaster of that town, which he held with honour for many years. He married in 1847 Eliza Pollard, of Horsham, who died in 1859, leaving him a widower with 6 children. Later he was married again to Eliza Davies, of Egremont, Cheshire, who now survives him.

On his retirement from business in 1873 he came to liver near his native town, at Clock House, Beaver, so called because of the clock he erected in a small tower in one of the buildings near the house. When he left Beaver some 18 months ago and came to live in Queen's-road, this clock was purchased by Mr. Charles Norwood, and has been erected by him at his residence on Charing-hill. Mr. Nickalls was always interested in natural history and meteorology, and kept for some 30 years a record of the rainfall for Symond's Meteorological Magazine. Older residents of the town will remember his uncle, also Thomas Nickalls, as a sturdy Quaker of the old school, who wore his broad brimmed hat so persistently that common report declared that he went to bed in it. His was a well known figure in Ashford 40 odd years ago. Mr. Nickalls leaves behind him many descendants scattered far and wide over the globe — Tasmania, Australia, Canada, the United States, Scotland and other places. His son, Mr. Albert Nickalls, holds a position on the educational staff of Wye Agricultural College.

Mr. Nickalls was physically a strong man until well over 90 years of age, and might be regularly seen on Sundays walking in and out again (a mile and a half) from Beaver, to attend the Friends' meeting at Hempsted-street. His mental faculties, also, were of no mean order, and he retained them practically to the very last.

His remains will be buried at the Friends' burying ground at Kennington at 2.30 to-day (Friday).
