HANNINGTON.—Wellington Arms. Thomas Thomas applied for a license to a new house lately erected by his Grace the Duke of Wellington. There is no other public house at Hannington, and Mr. Thomas and his father have kept a beerhouse there, called the Sheep Crook and Shears, for 20 years and upwards. This beerhouse being much too small for the requirements of the population, a large and commodious house has been erected, and used as a beerhouse since April last, but which will from the 10th October next become a public house under the license granted to Mr. Thomas as the Wellington Arms. |

BURGLARY.—On Sunday night, or Monday morning last, between eleven and five o'clock, the dwelling house of Thomas Thomas, Wellington Arms, Hannington, was entered by removing a pane of glass from one of the windows, and undoing the fastening. The following are the particulars of the cheques and money—namely, a 7l. cheque drawn by R.P. Dowling, of Hannington, in favour of Thomas Thomas; a cheque drawn by William Webb, also in favour of Thomas, both payable at Newbury Bank; a 5l. Basingstoke note, 4l. in gold, one old guinea, about 1l. in copper, and some silver coins, with all of which the thieves or thief got clear off Mr. Thomas quickly discovered that an entrance had been made by removing a quarry in a small lead light in the shop. The door between the shop and the sitting-room not being fastened, there was no difficulty, after once in the shop, about reaching the bureau, and as this piece of furniture was the only one touched, the suspicion is that the person or persons so busily engaged were no strangers to where Mr. Thomas kept his cash. Payment of the cheques have been stopped, and the police, we hope, will not be long before they hear a little more about the affair. |
