BASINGSTOKE, JAN. 30.
The Watch Committee
met on Tuesday, at the Town Hall, when Stephen Franklin was appointed
day policeman, and Wm. Franklin and Jacob Pigeon night policemen. We
have not the least hesitation in saying that the Committee have acted
with the best intentions, and no doubt they believe that the police, as
thus constituted, is sufficient to keep the peace of the town, and
protect the property of individuals; but our correspondent informs us,
that four night policemen and a superintendant are required.
