SCARBOROUGH.

ALARM OF FIRE.—On Wednesday night, the 22nd inst., between eleven and twelve o'clock, while some sailors were on the look out on the pier, they discovered a blaze of fire in the direction of Carr-street, and immediately set off to the place, calling out lustily "fire," to the great alarm of the inhabitants of Merchants'-row, Carr-street, &c. When the parties got to the premises of Mr W. Tessiman, spirit merchant, Carr-street, observing a light over his shop door, they imagined it was his house which was on fire, and began knocking loudly at the door, exclaiming they would all be burnt to death; but Mr. Tessiman, not having gone to bed, and having previously ascertained the cause of the alarm, assured them it was not his house, when the parties went to the house of Mr. John Rowntree, grocer, and the fire was there discovered, but we are happy to say that there was no occasion for the fire engines. The fire originated in a pile of sticks, dead branches of trees, and rubbish, which had been gathered in Mr. Rowntree's garden, and had been wilfully ignited by Mr. Rowntree's foreman, which certainly was a very imprudent act at that untimely hour.
