CAR - BUS CRASH ON ICY ROAD NO ONE TO BLAME FOR FATALITY — CORONER AFTER hearing evidence at the adjourned Inquest yesterday on Miss Audrey Richenda Estridge (73), of Barn Close, Portsmouth Road, Milford who was killed in a car-bus collision at Perry Hill, Worplesdon, about noon on December 15th, the Guildford Borough Coroner (Mr G.T.M. Methold) advised the jury that there not the slightest degree of negligence on the part of any person involved. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death." Miss Estridge was a passenger in an 8 h.p. Standard car, which skidded sideways down the ice and snow-bound hill into an Aldershot Traction bus. "Very Dangerous" Surface Walter James Jones, of Woking, the bus driver, told how he was climbing Perry Hill, Worplesdon, going towards Brookwood. Coming in the opposite direction was a small car which was not travelling fast, The surface was very dangerous, owing to ice and snow, he said. As the car approached it got into a skid. The front wheels appeared to be locked and they were sliding across the road. The car came sliding down the hill sideways, and struck the front near side of the bus on the radiator and wing. Speed of the bus at the time of impact was not more three miles per hour. Mrs. Elspeth Joan Plant, of 8 Beechwood Road, Lower Knaphill, who was sitting in a front seat of the bus, said that all of a sudden the car skidded and came straight across into the bus. "All I Remember" Miss Mabel Christine Foster, of Echo Pit House, Hill Lane, Godalming, driver of the Standard car, said that, by arrangement, she picked up the Misses Estridge at Abingdon to take them to Milford. They left Abingdon at 9.30 a.m. "All I remember," she continued, "is that I saw the bus in front of me. I do not remember any more." She said her speed was under 20 m.p.h. She been detained in hospital with injuries for a month. PC Chivers said that when arrived the occupants of the car were being put into an ambulance. The car was extensively damaged. Witness said that when he arrived there was no grit or other substance on the road. It was extremely slippery and most dangerous. Dr. David Haler said Miss Estridge had very severe injuries and she died from shock and hemorrhage in a few minutes. The Coroner told the jury it was "one those unfortunate cases" in which nobody could be held to blame. |
