THE ENGLISH CONSTITUTION.

WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT.

In addressing the members of the Margate Pioneer Society at the Fort Lodge Hotel at their last meeting, Mr. R.J.G. Rolfe, L.L.B., gave an interesting digest of the principal features of the English constitution. These were his points:— [long paragraph follows]

1931-09-28 at the Borough Bench in Arundel:

Robert John Rolfe, Hemel Hemstead, was summoned for leaving his car in a dangerous position. P.c. Woodley said that on September 22 defendant's car was standing on the south side of Maltravers-street, about six feet from the High-street corner. It was inside the yellow line, and its position made it difficult for cars to turn into Maltravers-street. Mr. C.B. Tompkins, defending, submitted that the position of the car was not one of danger, though it might be causing obstruction. The case was found proved, but no conviction was registered on payment of 4s. costs.

GREAT WEST MOTOR CLUB.

ANNUAL DINNER.

The first annual dinner and dance of the club was held at the Clarendon Restaurant, Hammersmith, on Saturday last. Mr. J.E. Bardrick was in the chair, supported by Messrs. H. L. Cox (toastmaster), Chas. J. A. Curd (secretary), Paul Hardy (sports secretary), C. P. Curd (treasurer), A. C. W. Leaver (bank manager), R. J. G. Rolfe (solicitor), J. D. Aldous (auditor), L. L, Schofield, P. Garrett. R. Day, A. Curtis, F. A. Thatcher, R. Jennings, P. Cook, J. Saxby, and other members, their ladies and guests, a total company of 60.

Alter the loyal toast, Mr. Leaver proposed "The Club," and congratulated the club in attaining such success in less than a year, and said that although his acquaintance with motor cars was very little, he did possess a bicycle, and hoped this would qualify him for membership. Fe wished the club every success.

The Chairman, in reply, said that the gathering had given much encouragement to those whose duty it was to run the club. During the club's short life they had not had many trials, although they had had many tribulations, but it was felt that the hard work had all been done, and they looked confidently forward to the future.

Mr. Rolfe extended to the visitors a cordial welcome, and expressed the hope that they had enjoyed the dinner and would enjoy the dancing. He hoped that many of the visitors that evening would decide that they could usefully join the club, but in any case he hoped to see them at the next dinner either as members or visitors.

Must Pay for 'Rogue' Partner

Lord Justice Goddard, in the King's Bench Division yesterday, gave judgment for plaintiff in an action by Miss Ethel Maude Annette Wingrove, of Oaklands Road, Havant, against Mr. Robert John Gardner Rolfe, solicitor, of Bedford Row, London, claiming £750 as being money had and received to her use.

The Judge said that on Sept. 6, 1932, Miss Wingrove made out a cheque for £750 to a Mr. Minshull, who was a partner of Mr. Rolfe, on Minshull's representation that he could invest it for her in a mortgage.

Minshull, it was clear, misappropriated that money. It was now a question of which of two innocent parties—Miss Wingrove or Mr. Rolfe—should suffer for the fraud of a third, because he was satisfied that Mr. Rolfe neither had the money nor benefited from it, nor in fact knew anything at all about the transaction.

Lord Justice Goddard said it was clear that Miss Wingrove, when dealing with Minshull was dealing with him as a partner with Mr. Rolfe in the firm they were carrying on of Munon, Morris, King and Co.

There must be judgment for Miss Wingrove for the amount claimed with costs, hard though it might be on Mr. Rolfe who had a rogue for a partner.
