Exemption had been granted to October 1st, and an extension had been refused. Diddams was acting as a clerk to the tax commissioners and to the justices. He had only been passed for clerical work at home. The local tribunal had suggested female assistance, but it was not a class of work suitable for women.—Until January 1st was conceded

Reading Mercury, 1916-10-14
1916-11-20 at Maidenhead Police Court, gave evidence in a dangerous driving case:

Boycott L. Diddams, Penyston Road, said the pace of the car attracted his attention, as it was going much faster than the usual rate for that hill. His opinion was that the car was travelling at anything from 30 to 35 miles an hour. He heard no warning before the sound of the collision. At the cross-roads he observed a boy pick up the wheel of a lady's bicycle. The car had stopped west of "Oaklands" and Miss Smith was lying apparently unconscious in front of it, her head being in the gutter and she was bleeding a good deal. It was 70 paces from the spot where the bicycle was found to where the lady was lying. He heard the driver of the car apply the brakes.

Cross-examined: The car was taking the crown of the road and was more on the crown that on the left side. A lorry came along after the accident; it was close at hand. He heard a noise as if the driver of the car was changing the gear.

[report continues; the case was dismissed]
