1918-09-18 | at Uxbridge magistrates' court: TROUBLE AT YIEWSLEY.—Olive Margaret Butler (25), of 4, Victoria-cottages, Horton-road, Yiewsley, was charged with assaulting Fanny Selina Taylor, by throwing a glass bottle at her and cutting her left arm.—Prisoner said she threw the bottle in self defence.—.—Prosecutrix said that she lived at 5, Victoria-cottages, Horton-road, Yiewsley. The previous evening at half-past seven prisoner said something to her mother, her mother saying "Come indoors and let them wash their mouths." Mrs. Butler threw a hoop over her mother's neck. Mrs. Butler then got hold of a bottle, and threw it either at her mother or sister, but it missed them and hit her on the arm, cutting it, and she had to have stitches in it. Prisoner subsequently threw a bird cage at her mother, and then went away.—P.c. Martin said that at 6.45 the previous evening he was on duty in High-street, Yiewsley, when he saw the prosecutrix and her mother going to the doctor's. The doctor examined her and put three stitches in her left arm. Witness went to Mrs. Butler, who denied throwing the bottle. He was unable to find the bottle, but some children told him they saw a boy throw it over the fence. That morning he went to the spot and found it.—Mrs. Taylor, the mother, and the sister, gave corroborative evidence of the assault.—Prisoner, on oath, said that Mrs. Taylor picked a bottle up and said that she would split prisoner's sister's skull open. She admitted throwing the hoop, and then Mrs. Taylor threw the bottle at her, and caught her on the shoulder. Prisoner threw it back.—Winifred Denahay, sister of the prisoner, supported the prisoner's statement that Mrs. Taylor threw the bottle first, denying that her sister threw the bottle back.—Mrs. Aldwyn also gave evidence that Mrs. Taylor threw the bottle first. Mrs. Butler picked it up and threw it back again; and it hit the door. Prisoner was then hit by the three of them. She suggested the wound was caused inside the house.—Mrs. Seagrove gave further evidence of the bottle being first used by Mrs. Taylor. She did not see Mrs. Butler throw anything at Mrs. Taylor.—Prisoner had to pay 10s. |

1922-01-26 | at the Council Office, gave evidence at the
inquest into the death of his grandmother, Ellen Dorsett: Thomas John Taylor said his grandmother enjoyed good health. On Sunday afternoon deceased went to his mother's house in Horton Bridge-road as was her custom. When she left at three o'clock she appeared to be quite well. She had her tea and ate an orange and at half-past nine started to return home. On the way she stopped several times. On the last occasion she leaned against the fence and stumbled over. Witness tried to hold her up as long as he could. She explained to him that the fog caused her to keep stopping. When he could hold her no longer he leaned her against the fence and went to an adjoining house for assistance. This was obtained, and deceased was carried home. |

TOMATO THIEVES WARNED "THERE have been several of these cases here and if this sort of thing is not stopped the Bench will have to inflict imprisonment without fine," commented Mr. R.R. Robbins at Uxbridge Court on Monday after fining two employees at Messrs. Lowe and Shawyer's Nursery, Uxbridge, £10 each for stealing tomatoes. The men were Arthur Ernest Taylor (34), of Acacia-avenue, Yiewsley, and Leslie Whenman, (33), of Old Farm-road, West Drayton. In the case of Taylor, P.C. Walter said at 12.15 p.m. on Friday he saw him cycling in Whitethorn-avenue, Yiewsley, and asked him what he had in a bag. He replied "Two lbs. of tomatoes; we are allowed them at work each week." Examining the bag the constable found it contained, in his opinion, about 4 lbs., and he told Taylor he should arrest him for stealing a quantity of tomatoes. At the station 7½ lbs. were found in the bag and in his pockets and he was charged with stealing 5½ lbs. He replied "Yes, I was going away on holiday; that is the reason why I took them." Replying to the Chairman, P.C. Walter said each employee was allowed to buy two lbs. each week at wholesale prices. Taylor had been employed for 20 years at the nursery. The Chairman said a large number of people could not buy tomatoes, yet here was a man allowed to purchase two lbs. each week, stealing more. There had been previous cases of the sort from this nursery and Taylor would have to pay the same as the others, £10 or a month. [story continues, but only re Whenman] |
