Mr. John Applegarth, (one of the people called Quakers) of Sledwick, near Barnard-Castle, who farms under James Pool, Esq; of London, has most generously determined to sell his corn, of this year's growth, for a guinea per boll, Winchester measure, to the poor of Barnard-Castle; and that the charity may not be abused, he has requested Mr Hullock, Mr Harrison, and Mr. C. Harrison, to select the proper objects, which is done every Wednesday morning, when thirty-two of them receive a peck of wheat each. This charity began on the third of December, and will continue till next harvest. A miller in the neighbourhood grinds the poor their corn for 1d. a peck. Mr Applegarth sells his potatoes to the poor of Staindrop for 6d. per peck. |

Wednesday last, as Thomas Wood, a Master Mason, of Staindrop, was at work at Raby Castle, the ladder, on which he stood, came down, owing to the stage which supported it giving way, when he fell to the ground; and a stone which he was placing in the wall followed him, which, pitching upon his head, killed him on the spot. What renders this accident the more distressing, he has left a wife (with child) and four small children, whose only support depended upon his earnings |
