Yesterday forenoon, about twenty minutes to ten o'clock, Mr Benjamin Gilpin, for many years a chemist in Pilgrim Street, Newcastle, died somewhat suddenly at his residence. The deceased was a middle-aged man, unmarried, a member of the Society of Friends, and very greatly respected. |

Mr. Benjamin Gilpin, of Pilgrim-street, Newcastle, chemist, who, though in delicate health, was in his shop on Monday, died in the forenoon of Tuesday. He was a man of active benevolence, and one of the warmest friends of the Shoeblack Brigade. |

[from the report of the Newcastle Shoe-Black
Brigade:] Death has removed from his place in the committee a worthy and upright man, of a kindly heart and generous nature. The chair of Mr. Benjamin Gilpin is vacant at our little board, and we have lost the benefit of his business knowledge, sound judgment, and active benevolence. |

FUNERAL OF MR. BENJAMIN GILPIN.—The funeral of Mr. Benjamin Gilpin, whose sudden death we recorded two or three days ago, took place on Friday. During the forenoon, the shops at the lower end of Pilgrim Street were partially closed as a mark of respect to the departed; but the regard for his memory is universal. The funeral cortege consisted of three mourning coaches, a hearse, and about half a dozen private carriages belonging to members of the Society of Friends. The Shoeblack Brigade, accompanied by their superintendent, followed the procession as a last tribute of their gratitude to one of their kind benefactors; and one who endeavoured his best for their good. Mr. Gilpin's active benevolence is well known; and one of the last charitable acts of his useful life—the interest which he manifested in the reclamation of the street Arabs—is not the least of the many which cling to his memory. The deceased was interred at Jesmond Cemetery. |
