1818-09 emigrated to the USA with his wife, seven children and a cousin, David Binns, and his wife Margaret Holden. They sailed on the ship Juno and arrived at Philadelphia on 1818-10-21, and immediately moved on to the Brownsville area. He was transferred to a new Monthly Meeting; Providence Monthly Meeting Books:

James Binns presents certificate from Knaresborough Meeting at Otley, Yorks. (Old England) 10 day 8 month 1818, for self, wife Alice (now deceased) & 7 children namely—Sarah, Margaret, William, John, Joseph, Wilson and Hannah with endorsements from Short Creek MM in Ohio dated 18 May last. Received and accepted. 7th month 20th day 1819.

Providence preparative meeting informs, that James Binns, has charged the monthly meeting with entering falshoods on its minutes, which he persists in, and says said falshoods amounts to a lie, likewise has so far identified himself with the doctrines of Elias Hicks, as to be engaged in giveing information of and procureing a place to hole one of his meetings and attend the same. Abner Gilbert, and Jonathan Sharpless, are appointed to treat with him on the occasion, and Report their sense of the disposition of his mind to next meeting.
