FATAL ACCIDENT.—A sad accident occurred yesterday afternoon to Charles Smith, coachman to Captain Bradford, of Chawton, and for many years previously coachman to the late Rev. C.B. Knight, of Chawton Vicarage. It appears that Smith was riding a spirited horse and had occasion to go through a gateway at Farringdon, when the horse suddenly reared, threw his rider, broke his skull so that the brain protruded, and then kicked him and broke his jaw. Dr. Wilson, of Alton, happened to be passing at the time, and rendered his services most promptly, but without avail, as the man died within five minutes of the accident. He was a quiet and well conducted person, and leaves a wife and five children to lament his loss. |

ACCIDENT.—Mr. J.M. Tood took an inquest on Saturday, at Chawton, upon the body of Charles Smith, aged 52, who was coachman to Captain Bradford. On the previous Thursday, about 3 o'clock p.m., he was out on a horse of his master's, which was a quiet animal, and had been ridden by him many times. When he got to Mr. Pusey's yard at Farringdon he endeavoured, without dismounting, to open a gate, upon which the horse reared thrice, and deceased fell backwards, striking his head violently on the road. Blood came from his mouth and ears, and he was speechless and insensible. Dr. Wilson passed in his carriage at the moment, and rendered every assistance, but death was instantaneous, for the skull was fractured and the brain protruding. The horse reared because the saddle had slipt round when deceased leant over to open the gate. Verdict, "Accidental death." |
