1857-08-28 | at Kingsclere Petty Sessions: ASSAULT.—Robert Baggs, bailiff to W. Chaplin, Esq., of Ewhurst, was summoned for assaulting James Lawrence, a hired servant in his employ. Mr. Cave appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. It appeared that the defendant had ordered the complainant to do certain work, which he refused, and the result was the assault complained of. He was ordered to pay costs 7s. 6d. The defendant in the last case was also summoned for refusing to pay James Lawrence certain wages which he claimed, alleging that the defendant had discharged him from his service. Mr. Cave, however, proved that the complainant left of his own accord. The Bench therefore dismissed the case. |

1853-08-19 | witness at Newbury County Court, in an action for
damages for wilfully damaging a carriage in Wolverton: Jane Baggs stated that she lived at Wolverton, and on the 15th June last, whilst standing at the cottage door with Hannah Soper, recollected seeing Miss Gordon pass in a pony chaise. It was about 20 yards off when she first saw it, on the left hand side of the road, and partly on the foot-path. She saw the waggon behind, and the first horse touched Miss May's shoulder. The waggon was in the middle of the road, and then crossed over to the carriage. She heard a crash, but did not know whether it was done by the horse or the shaft of the waggon. Miss Gordon drove on afterwards; she was a little way past the cottages. Charlton said, if she did not get out of his way he would drive over her; she drove on very slowly and kept in front of the waggon; she was on the left hand side; there was room enough for 2 waggons to pass. Hannah Soper was called, who corroborated the evidence of the last witness. They were both cross-examined by Mr. Cripps, but he failed to shake their evidence. |

Jane Baggs said,—I live with Mr. Fuller, of Wolverton. Recollected the 15th of June last. Was standing at some cottages in the Wolverton road, when I saw Miss Gordon, about 20 yards distance, in a pony chaise, and the defendant behind with a waggon and two horses. The waggon was in the middle of the road when I first [saw] it, and it passed over to Miss Gordon's side, the first horse touching Miss May's shoulder, and immediately afterwards I heard a crash. The parties were talking very loud. The defendant said if they did not get out of the way he would drive over them. Cross-examined.—They had passed the cottages when I saw them. Miss Gordon was going very slow in front of the waggon. The collision occurred upon a hill—about 200 yards from the Kingsclere road. The fence before the cottages prevented me seeing every thing that occurred on the road. Hannah Soper corroborated the evidence of the last witness. [ . . . ] His Honour.—From the moment he heard the evidence of Sloper [sic] and Baggs, the simplicity and straightforwardness they had exhibited, convinced him that the plaintiff was entitled to a verdict. It was gratifying to him to experience as a judge, with the exception of one case at Abingdon, that he had never known a single instance brought before him where he had to notice a female deviating from the truth. He believed the evidence of the defendant was an entire fabrication from beginning to end, excepting in the corroboration of the testimony of plaintiff in driving off at a rapid pace after the collision. Verdict for the defendant with statute costs. |

SAD ACCIDENT. — On Wednesday afternoon an accident of a very serious nature happened to a man named James Bagg [sic], under gardener at Wolverton House, Kingsclere, and his wife. They had been into Basingstoke, and were returning in Owen the carrier's conveyance, when from some cause one of the wheels came off, and the occupants were thrown out and severely injured. Bagg sustained a compound fracture of the leg, and his wife had three ribs broken, and sustained other injuries. As the accident occurred near Dr. Sweeting's surgery they were taken there and received what assistance was possible. They were subsequently taken to the Infirmary at the Union. The man's leg has since been successfully set by Mr. C.F. Webb, but we understand that his wife is so much injured that fears are entertained of her recovery. |
