MARY SPENCE,      10    20  2 mo.  1858

North Shields. Daughter of Joseph and Caroline Spence.

The closing scene of this dear child's life affords an interesting and instructive example of the simplicity of true and living faith, and of the victory which that faith gives its possessor over the fear of death.

The period between the commencement of her last illness and her death was very brief, not two weeks from the first appearance of indisposition to the close; and it was only during the then is the belief last two or three days of her life that she was considered to be in imminent danger: how consoling then is the belief, that she had through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, sought for and obtained that grace which is all sufficient, and by which alone we can be saved.

Although naturally of an unusually fearful temperament, she bore her illness with great meekness and patience: on one occasion she said, "I have prayed for patience;" and at another time, when regret was expressed on account of her sufferings, she replied, "I must take what God sends;" and more than once she said "how comfortable she felt after having prayed." The day preceding her death, she remarked, "I ought to love Jesus more than any one," and soon afterwards, "I don't love him so much as I ought, but I wish to love him better;" and at another time, "I love Jesus," soon after adding, "Mamma, is there not somewhere in the Bible, where Jesus compares himself to a hen gathering its chickens under its wings?"

When told, a few hours before her decease, of the very critical state she was in, the thought of immediate death seemed at first unwelcome to her, and she said, "I want to get well and be better," and again, "I wish to go to heaven, but I don't want to die yet, I should like to live and be useful;" but when encouraged to endeavour to leave the issue in the hands of Him who does all things well, and to be resigned to His will, she answered, "Then I will;" this resolution she was mercifully enabled to keep, and to contemplate the approach of death with calmness and resignation. After a short time she said cheerfully, "I shall see all my little cousins who have died." On hearing her grandfather mentioned she said, Give my love to Grandpapa, and tell him I have prayed to be better; and I have prayed that my sins may be forgiven." Allusion being made to her little brother and sister, she answered, "give my love to them, and tell them to pray every night; tell them, if they are ever very ill, they will find it very useful to have prayed every night." A childlike but very expressive testimony to the value and importance of prayer.

On her father repeating two verses of the hymn commencing

"There is a happy land,"

She took up the last verse, and with her now feeble and failing voice, repeated herself,

"Bright in that happy land, beams every eye,

Kept by a Father's hand, love cannot die;

On then to glory run, be a crown and kingdom won,

And bright above the sun, we'll reign for aye."

The last words were hardly audible, and it was evident that life was ebbing fast. Her father asked if she was quite happy; her lips moved, but utterance was gone; on being requested to move her hand, in token of her happiness, she at once raised her right hand; but it fell again. Her spirit had returned to Him who gave it. "Of such is the kingdom of heaven."

TYNEMOUTH GUARDIANS' ELECTION.

SIR.—As an old guardian will you kindly allow me through your columns to urge upon the electors of the Chirton and Whitley Parishes to support the two lady guardians, viz. Miss Anna Caroline Spence and Mrs Helen Frazer, who are opposed in their separate parishes, as I can testify to the valuable services rendered by them to the large number of female inmates and young children in our institution, as well as the outside poor, many of the latter being frequently visited by them, also at the letting of clothing contracts, in the choice of suitable materials for their use. I am, therefore, satisfied that no gentleman can fill their place, and I think, sir, you will agree with me that the devotion of the Spence family to the relief and uplifting of the poor belonging to our Union, for over half a century, is unequalled, and I hope these two ladies will be returned at the head of the poll, and thereby prove that their past services have been appreciated. Thanking you in anticipation,

I remain, yours truly,

CHARLES FOOT.

The death occurred this morning in her 79th year of Miss Anna Caroline Spence, of 5 Rosella Place, North Shields, a daughter of the late Ald. Joseph Spence, who was Liberal candidate for the Borough of Tynemouth against the late Mr R.S. Donkin in the year 1885. The deceased lady was honorary treasurer of the Tynemouth Women's Liberal Association from 1894 until she was compelled to resign through failing health in 1926. She was also keenly interested in poor law administration, and was a member of the Tynemouth Union Board of Guardians from 1907 until the torennial [sic] elections in 1925, when she voluntarily retired.
