A FATAL CYCLE RIDE. OLD MAN KILLED BY A YOUTH AT MILBORNE PORT. On Sunday afternoon a man named George Andrews, a veteran of the Crimea, [ . . . ] was knocked down by a bicycle ridden by a youth named Percy Clark [ . . . . ] Andrews was picked up insensible, and died during the evening. The sad event occurred at the junction of the Gainsborough and Sherborne-roads—admittedly a bad corner—opposite Mr. Trevett's and not far from the National School. THE INQUEST was held [ . . . ] on Tuesday afternoon [ . . . . ] Alfred Trevett, living on the Sherborne-road, deposed that on Sunday witness and deceased and a man named Lambert were returning from the Church Bible Class at 3.15. They stopped at witness's gate, and were talking. Someone said "Look up," and he saw a bicycle ridden by a lad named Percy Clark, coming from Gainsborough-street. He was going at a very fast rate, and when he got to the corner he turned towards Sherborne. James Lambert and witness stepped back on to the sidewalk close to his gate. They had been standing a little way in the road, and Andrews farther from them towards the centre of the road. Andrews tried to get back, but was not quick enough, and was knocked down by the bicycle. Clark was thrown. All assisted to pick Andrews up and carried him to Mrs. Bugler's house, and the doctor was sent for. Clark said that he had no control over his machine whatever.—The Foreman: Did Clark say that he would not have had it happen for more than £20?—Witness said that he did not know, but a juryman remarked that the lad had declared that he would rather beat himself to pieces than have the accident happen to the man.—Re-called, witness said the lad might have rung his bell, but he did not hear it. |
