STEALING WHEAT AT CHATHAM. DANIEL TUNBRIDGE, 38, shipwright, was charged with stealing five bundles of wheat, the property of Thomas Nixon Quarrington, on the 28th August. Mr. F.J. Smith was for the prosecution. The prisoner was seen to take the wheat from some sheaves by prosecutor's niece, who gave information to her uncle, and the accused was apprehended. In his cross-examination of the witnesses the prisoner exhibited an ingenuity which seemed to indicate that he was not unacquainted with the mode of procedure in a court of justice. He made a pathetic speech to the jury with a view to excite their compassion on behalf of his four motherless children. He was found guilty, and sentenced to Six months' hard labour. |
