A CASE OF THROWING STONES.—Ernest Walters, of Cranford, was summoned for assaulting Edward Austin on Sunday, October 2nd. The plaintiff said that he was looking after his mother's baby when the defendant threw at him three times, and hit him in the eye. The defendant, sobbing, stated that when he was coming home from Sunday School, the complainant kicked him in the groin, and he threw a stone which hit his eye., The Bench said they would not hear any more of the case; it would be dismissed. If they heard any more of this, or the boy was brought up again for a like offence, he would very likely get punished.

1913-06-28 at Uxbridge Police Court:

A CLAIM FOR WAGES.—William Joseph Whitnall, of Cranford, was summoned by Henry John Walters for £1 for wages in lieu of notice.—Defendant pleaded not guilty.—The plaintiff said he entered the defendant's service seven years ago. He was engaged by defendant as a market-garden labourer. His wages were £1 per week all the year round. Part of his duties was to drive a motor-plough, and on June 12th this went wrong. Witness could not find out what was the matter with it, and so he left it. He went back and started it, and the handle flew off and hit witness in the face. Defendant came up and accused him of playing about with it, and witness told him that he should not drive it any more. Defendant told him not to be insolent, and witness replied that he was not insolent. Defendant then told him he could go, and witness said, "I can go." Later witness went. He asked defendant for his money, and defendant said the he would give it to him on Saturday. Witness went to him on Saturday and asked for a week's wages, which defendant refused to pay him.—In answer to defendant, witness admitted that he had occasionally done piece work.—Defendant, on oath, said that on the afternoon of June 12th he went into the field and saw plaintiff working with the other gang. He went towards them and said to witness, "What is the trouble now? I suppose you have been playing about." After some talk, plaintiff said, "I shan't drive the plough any more; drive it yourself." Witness replied, "I can't have any insolence," and plaintiff said, "Oh! I can go," and witness said that he might go. He asked for his money, which witness told him he could have on Saturday. On Saturday he went and asked for two weeks' money. Witness sent the money for the work he had done on to him my post.—The summons was dismissed.
