He joined in 1916, and shortly afterwards was sent to France. Whilst on the Western Front he was employed on important duties, but, owing to heart trouble, was unable to proceed up the line and was in hospital for some time. He was in consequence discharged in August 1917, and holds the General Service and Victory Medals.
